This what i started with. I was trying to get rustic old feel and try to get the Buffalo to stand out. I am very new to post processing and use whatever program i can find for free - presently Gimp.

I think you can achieve your goal "making the Buffalo stand out" very easily in the color version, then consider converting to B & W.

Hi Mathew, I personally like the 3rd the most. I would guess that it's the closest to what came out of the camera. The B&W is hard and shows more contrast than what I am comfortable with. The second, de-saturated version version isn't bad, but it looses a lot of the beauty you naturally have in the scene.
Gimp can be an awfully powerful software given it's open source. Like all good editing programs though, it has a bit of a learning curve. Take the time to get to know it, there are tons of tutorials on the subject.
Keep at it, this is a very good effort ...

Thanks for the encourgement. The middle one is the jpg i started with, raw would have been better but this was a quick drive by photo that we were not expecting -- just grabbed the camera and shot -- i used the canon software to bring up the sharpness and colors a bit.

Hi Matthew, although I prefer the third edit, all of your conversions have that twig coming out of his butt !! It would be nice if you can remove that...and please blur that sharp brown piece of wood at the top of his back...just a suggestion...

Matt, I think you have achieved your aim of producing a vintage affect with the B&W, but like Izzy, I find that stick in his butt distracting. It looks like he was bested by the matador.

One good hit by the buffalo in the dunce cap might knock some sense into your washing machine..or not, but it would be entertaining to watch and would make a good picture

One of our washing machines broke not too long ago, and more recently it was suspected that the other did, but really a pillow explosion was the cause. That is generally better but if you are prone to headaches you probably prefer your pillow.

Does the hat and so on indicate this photo has been considered a hopeless case? Well, I think the last version is the closest to a good edit- minus the hat and glasses, if you are looking for a serious photo still.
