Thanks Binnur. Yep, you're right about the composition possibilities.

Bring an SUV. It is a little bumpy but it is a lot of fun.

Good advice. There are a many two tracks through state forest lands that are not quite suited to a Honda Fit We like to walk too. I thought those mountains looked intriguing.

    Hi Steve,

The rock in the foreground + the side road leading into the frame were both
very good compositional decision. The light… well, the light is the light that was
there at the time. I would be most interested to see your clever frame under
    more advantageous light!

Thanks Kodiak. I should try it just before sunset but I'd probably get my shadow in the shot!

Daniel, I like the road in the shot; however, as a newbie, I wasn't sure about the rocks. Why was inclusion of the rocks a good add -- would like to understand this from a learning perspective. Thanks

I'll chime in here too. Having an in focus foreground object is a technique to add depth to an image. Without the rocks I think the image would appear flat or 2D. With the rocks the image (at least to my eye) it looks 3D. Of course the background would need to be in focus to complete the illusion. You can likely find better examples in this forum. Just some more of my $0.02.

Ah, thank you Steve, now I see it and it makes perfect sense.

Steve got a pretty good explanation.

Mine is layering. The rock at your feet… way-out to the mountain and the sky.
close, middle, far range all have something for the eye… an eye amusement park! ;-)

After Steve's and Caddy's (fill in your profile) replies, I have nothing to add!
