    Theatre Costume

A costume designer friend of mine (working for a theatre company) asked
me to take some photographs of several costumes she made in preparation
for the next season. As the shooting went well (Olivier is a great assistant)
and we still had some time on hands, my son asked:

    — "Dad, do you think I could try one of the cool costumes? …and maybe you
could take a picture of me in it?"

    — "Which one do you have in mind?"

    — "What about this one?!

    — "Wow… you're gonna look like an Emperor in it…"

Why not, he worked so fine and kids like to disguise… don't they?

So, Ladies and Gentlemen… His Majesty, Emperor Olivier the 1st:

    Theatre Costume

    Theatre Costume

    Theatre Costume

I have to admit that this was much fun!
… and Olivier had a taste of what it is to be a model.

    C&C welcomed!

He certainly likes to experiment, why can't I find someone willing to go the extra mile for a shot.

    Nicely composed and exposed.

    The emperor has new clothes!

I like the mood of all of these. The plain background works really well for me.

    And where's the hockey stick??

Just joking. Another very fine set of images.

I like your choice of camera angles. Looking up from below adds strength to the shot and of course the plain, neutral background ensures that there are no distractions. I wonder what this shot would look like shot on the theatre set; sort of an environmental portait approach?

I keep looking at the third one and wonder what if would look like if the lighting ratio was even more extreme and dramatic?

While to me the images all (always) look great, what I'm most impressed about is the close and apparently fun relationship you have with your son(s). That speaks volume about you.

Every morning and evening, Olivier has to apply some care cream on his face…
The resulting specular spot may be responsible of what you qualify as strange!

This aspect of portrait taking technique was explored earlier this week.
Extreme, or even hard stage lights are not an option when shooting a
subject with complexion difficulties such as seen on teenagers. This is
why Olivier's photographs are treated rather dramatically given the
costume but nevertheless in soft light.

Tomorrow, Carlos is coming to the studio. He is a school mate of Olivier,
has no complexion problem, has the body of an athlete, rather short in
stature but very handsome. Yeah right, I forgot to say that Carlos has
all the beautiful negroid features nature may dispense to an individual.

    …can't wait!

Excellent shot of Olivier as usual, Daniel...I love #1 and #3...best of the lot. There is a certain look in his eyes in #2 that I do not favour so much, otherwise, the lighting, the mood of the shots are very good. Will wait for the next installment of the Carlos shot.

Hey Jack, thanks for comment! When it comes to my relation with the boys,
it was all a father could hope for since we were among us. Bénédict had to
leave for the civil services and since then Olivier is a bit moody… but he is
still a great son. The hockey training camp will start soon and he will be
    with his BIG brother again.

As I have a teenaged daughter, so I fully understand. On the other hand; that is what makeup and post processing are there for.

Don't like the copyright notice across the middle Kodiak but three exceptionally fine portraits by a master of his art. Sets an example.

Lighting is superb, excellent! On a lighter note, reminds me of "A night at the museum".

Yeah, I know… but this was a spontaneous shoot, remember?
PP? Olivier is not the kind of guy to powder his nose before or after the shoot! :-)
