    Maine Coone Cats

I'm sure I read a post on this site some time ago saying that cat photos were naff. Well - tough. Here are some of my two Maine Coones - Tom and Arwen. Tom also doubles as my avatar. Arwen has the white bib.

All images have been processed using Canon's DPP software and cropped.

If there wasn't one, there should have been (cue all cat lovers sending hate mail). Only kidding!!

Interesting use for a laptop on #1.

But in terms of the images, #2 is my pick of the bunch. Why?
The 'pose' and the darker background that contrasts with the colour of the cat and therefore makes it stand out, work for me.
#1 - Has the cat staring straight at us. Doesn't work so well, IMO
#3 - The cat is lost a bit against the background
    #4 - The cat looks a bit startled/unsettled.

    Beautiful cats.
#2 is my pick for the same reasons as Donald mentioned and also because the cat looks so relaxed and has a nice expression.
#1 makes me chuckle because I have the same problem here with cats and computers. It must be the mice. In this case I think I'd caption it with something like - "No!, you may not check my browsing history, and quit pointing that thing at me"
#3 is also a very nice shot, and would be a great matching set of the pair if Arwen's ears were forward.
I like number 4, but as Donald said she looks too startled and uncomfortable. Looks like Tom's going to be the best model. Arwen looks a bit camera shy.

David, there is something fundmentally wrong with people who don't like cats...but I've forgotten the punchline

    Love yours.

On camera flash by the looks. Not a big fan of on camera flash. Did you use a diffuser at all?

The last one is a ripper! What an expression

BTW: I'm assuming "naff' means something like boreing or mundane?

Might have to post a portrait of my $2000 cat from Japan named "Mum-mum" if I can find the time...and get motivated

    Hi Hans,

I would say (in UK usage) "Naff" means; bad, very low quality, not worthy of consideration, pointless.

Sell "Mum-mum"; buy a lens, or two
I'm allowed to say that, we have four cats - sadly, none worth a penny/cent, but we love 'em anyway - most of the time

    Cheers,

Oops ... I think I was the culprit who 'started' the last 'cattery!'
Well, well, must carry on the tradition with another of Pussy (yes ... that is his name, so original!) in his relaxed state.
Pussy is a 'Heinz 57' variety!

Thanks for all the kind comments - Tom would like to add that he is available for photo-shoots - fees to be paid in small furry rodents.

Hans - I agree I don't really like camera flash now, but I was playing about with a new head for a monopod and thought I would snap these guys. I had not intended to post any of the shots, but when I looked on screen I thought maybe one or two were OK.

    Thanks again.

    Cheers

    David

    PS - I forgot - it's their birthdays today - 7 years old.

Ok Dave ... here then is the hard word from some cat lovers! Run a competition on cats at some stage and you could WIN 'cause you have 4 to have a go at!

All ya gotta do is win the first themed challange ...

Nothing to stop you guys and gals starting a new thread*, it doesn't really need to be a challenge does it?

    * How about;
    Feline Fine, or
    Monochrome Moggies, or
    Cats in Colour, or
    Putty cat Pics, or
    shall I stop now?

Whatever you choose, put something like " - POST YOUR PICS HERE" in the thread title too, so it encourages all sorts to join in.

    .. and if the "doggy people" feel left out, there is an obvious solution;

    Canines in Colour, or
    Desaturated Dogs, or
    Mutt of the Month, or
    shall I shut up?

Probably not the last as you appear to be a repeat offender!

    Aha

Sell "Mum-mum"; buy a lens, or two

Dave, that is how much she has cost me in vet bills while in Japan and having her 'imported' via jumbo jet to Australia...definitely not how much she is worth!!!

She was just a nora neko (stray cat) from the alleys where we lived in Chiba. She must have seen us for the softies we are and adopted us. While in Japan she had two litters before we got her spayed(sp?), was set on fire by kids, then kidnapped by the Yakuza and I had to crawl along a second storey balcony to rescue her...it's a long story

Anyway, here is a snap with the Canon Powershot A630.

We have two cats, "Lucky" aka the prince of darkness, and "Pablo" aka the garbage disposal. One problem I've found with photographing cats is that once you point your camera at them they either run away or run towards you. Also, don't try to hold your camera steady around them, they will definitely see this as an excellent opportunity to rub up against you.

    I second that!

    Oh no!!!!
What's this, do you criticise the creative capture of captivating cute cuddly cats! Do you fob off those with a fancy fetish for furry friendly feline friends? Come on, Donald, where's yours?
