Re: Sand Hill Crane..One Egg Hatched, One To Go

Thanks Paul. My wife and I were back there today, both eggs have hatched and both chicks are walking and hiding in the underbrush. Moma is very protective, we watched her chase any birds that came within about 50 feet away. Because the chicks were buried in the underbrush we could not get any good shots, maybe when they get a little bigger.

Both eggs hatched, I found the adults with the fledglings around mid-day today. The light was harsh and very contrasty. Below are the captures.

Great captures Joe, they look a lot like our Brolga (crane) in australia. Its rare to get a moment like this.

Thanks Wayne for taking the time to view and your comments. My wife and I have been following the progress and photographing this pair since we discovered the nest close to a nature trail we walk on. The fledglings were up and about the next day after hatching. I hope they both survive to adulthood, we have see eagles, hawks, owls, and a bob cat in the area. It was a very special time to photograph.

Nesting is the best time to get good shots, we have some rare birds which love our yard as we have a full canopy rainforest and a tidal creek out the back. Great to see others appreciate birds and take the time to admire them. Keen to see more Joe.

There is always something warm and fuzzy about birds with their offspring. Nicely done.

Nice captures. It's good you could go back and complete the series, yes too bad about the harsh light, but still great to continual as you have.

    Hi Joe,

Not seen this thread until now - wow!

Even with the harsh light, you've handled it well.

Hope they make it and don't become prey.

    Cheers,
