Advice Needed: Canon G9 vs. Canon S5 IS

Hey Guys!! I am new to this forum.. I am keen on buying a digital camera for point and shoot but should also have features that will be once I get a good hand on it.I have shortlisted Canon G9 or Canon S5.Any other suggestion would be appriciated..I need to choose out of this list.Also I read the reviews for both of them but am unable to decide as to which one's better..

Re: Advice Needed!!

I recently bought S5 IS (a month ago).. so far so good.. it has a lot of features and in most of the reviews i read this is one of the best super zoom camera in the market... but it doesnt have RAW shooting mode.. (but you can try CHDK to get some additional feautures) I guess apart from the RAW mode there is not much difference between S5 and G9 (Pros' correct me if im wrong) G9 is 12.1 Megapixels with 6x optical zoom S5 is 8 Megapixels with 12x optical zoom... S5 has a Swivel type LCD display which i liked the most.. I think G9 is bit costlier than S5..so its up to you to decide which one to opt for..

Well said!

You just have to do some minor work to get CHDK working and getting used to it.

Re: Advice Needed!!

check out this post
for more details..

The demerits of S5 may be. (according to me)

* Its weight (450g)
* Its lens cap (too loose..)
* AA size batteries (4 nos) - Ni Mh batteries
* Battery compartment has the Memory card slot.. (little clumsier to remove the latch)

Canon doesnt give much of the accessories out of the box.. for eg it only has 32 Mb SD card, you need to buy an external SD card, Rechargeable batteries with charger, etc.. etc..

Re: Advice Needed!!

I agree with the demerits of S5 but you can't get it all within that budget.And I think according to your use the merits of S5 overshadows the demerits.Somewhere you have to compromise.If you can extend your budget a bit you can go for an entry level dlsr.You can go for Canon 400D or 40D. You can get 400D with 18-55 MM Lens for around £370 @ Checkcost.Also go through the review..All the best!!
