Thanks Dave. The closer you get to these critters the harder they are to photograph. I would love to be able to focus stack but they dont stay in the same position for long enough. Even then hand held focus stacking must be a nightmare. God knows how Thomas Shahan does it handheld. My exposure on histogram looks fine though I can see what you mean about the golden part below the eyes. I am gald you like the composition. As for the Name I thought I would fill the empty space with some thing.

Is this an improvement??

I wanted to get closer, but wind was blowing and the camera was handheld. This was the sharpest I could achieve. Hoping for a sunny day without wind now. Spring is in the air, so more of these wonderful little insects should appear soon.

Here three examples of my macros. The last two are special to me.
The first shows that flying against something can give damage also that an insect uses a leg to during eating. Is this a kind of intelligence? I have seen this on more pictures. The last is a malformed fly. He has only one eye and also not in a really nice shape.

Nice detail on the middle one, what kind of equipment did you use?

For all pictures I use the Nikkor105mm and always the stabilization on. I use for the last two pictures the two smallest rings of the set of 3. In my case with all 3 in use the AF stops.
I use a SB-800 flash. If mounted on the camera then I place a self made tube on the flash to get the light good in front of the lens. Two thin layers of a tissue I use as a diffuser.
At the second picture the flash was mounted on a tripod and had also fixed the flower on a leg of that tripod. The sun I blocked with a diffuser plate also mounted on the tripod. I have a then a good stable area with nice controlled light to make the macros and the flower attracts the insects. Just sit in a chair and click. A big part of my macros I have made on this way.
The first two I have made with a D70. Till now the D70 was often better for my macros then its replacement, the D300. After reading the section about diffraction I knew the why also.

Jim B., I really love the contrast that your little creature has against the flower. I find your picture quite lovely, and, as a result, I find myself thinking that bugs are not just pests that shouldn't be around, but that they have souls, just as we do.

Spring finally on its way here and finally found some woodland that isn't impenetrable jungle. Very pleasant little spot complete with stream and absolutely full of primroses (which this apparently is) and .... other stuff.
Reversed the tripod for this shot and hand held a flash to light it. Nikon D300s and Mamiya 80mm macro with adapting ring.

Jan. Well done. Some great shots. I particularly like trhe second shot. Excellent capture. Great detail. Its a shame the background was dark so the detail of the right eye is lost. I like your setup. One needs to control these shots- the light (flash), distance from the subject and the immoblity of subject.

Its a shame the right eye of the last flower is lost. Keep them coming and good work.

Spring is coming to the hills of Ohio. These were tucked in the woods along our road. The picture is a bit grainy as my Rebel does not perform well at higher ISOs. I took this picture at literally last light with my 4X magnification lens. DOF is shallow. They are tiny, and very delicate.

Feel free to c&c. I know I oopsed on placing the text. It is a bit low.

Small and hard

For 3 years I made macros on the same small place. Based on the DVD Microcosmos: Le peuple de l'herbe. (The grass people) a documentary by Claude Nuridsany and Marie Pérennou. Of course I don’t reach that quality and it’s a film but the idea was perfect for me.
In my serie “Little world of Insects” fits also pictures that shows how hard that small world is.

Now I’m busy to put the pictures on a DVD. Searching for the good music that fits with the pictures is now the hardest part.
