The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
[Note: Inspired totally by Dave Humphries' idea!]
Things have been a bit quiet recently - so time to spice things up a little!
Here's a new challenge for you ...
Over the next week or two go out and take some shots of what best represents the "essence" of the town / city / community in which you live, and post exactly 4 images in a single post (with an associated commentary if you with) in this thread; the kind of thing that would be printed in a brochure to promote your region.
Photos have to be taken from this day onward (by you) - and when we're done we'll have a vote on it - and as a bit of an incentive, I'll send the winner a brand new book from Amazon.com on some appropriate topic related to photography.
Ladies and Gentlemen ...
... start your cameras!
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
Colin,
A great idea. Could the photos be landscape of my local region? Or they have to be people/building photos?
Regards,
Yan
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
Thank you Colin,
:o Although Dave would like to acknowledge Brigitte was the person that gave him the idea!
Hi Yan,
I'm sure Colin will confirm, but my interpretation is:
If it is the landscape that would 'sell' the community in which you live to people reading a brochure on your region, then it would be valid to have some landscape shots, especially if they help convey the "essence".
Cheers,

Part of this concept I find significant is FOUR images only! To sell your environment.
Now that's a challenge! I'm going to give it a whirl.

Hi Yan,
What Dave wrote is spot on - whatever you think best represents your region.
I thought of limiting it to only 4 images simply because if we put a whole heap more in each post then it'll probably get a bit "unweildy". It's a bit of an experiment, so we'll see how we go with this one :)
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
I am going to risk starting this one going and as it will spur the rest of you to greater feats, I will be safe from winning a book on colour management ;)
1: Hereford is surrounded by five market towns, each full of historic buildings and a host of subsidiary attractions. This is the churchyard in Ross-on-Wye at the south west corner and within a few miles of the Welsh border

2: The Malvern Hills form the eastern boundary of the county; seen from the crest about a mile from our house, here is Little Malvern Priory
http://www.evendine.eclipse.co.uk/images/dsc_9138.jpg
3: Typical of the county landscape are these folds of richly wooded hills and the remains of parkland planted on a necklace of estates owned by minor gentry
http://www.evendine.eclipse.co.uk/images/dsc_9110.jpg
4: Agriculture is still the primary activity; here a traditional suckler cow has its calf at heel not far away and is seen against one of thousands of timber framed houses and its thatched granary

Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
Hi Chris,
Thanks for being "first off the blocks" - you're in the lead so far!
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
Hi folks,
I must admit that this thread appears to be going a bit slower than I'd intended!
I'll let it run to the end of the month - and then send Chris his prize if nobody else joins in and turns this into a real competition!
Come on ... lets all get shooting! Something ... ANYTHING! It's not often websites give away REAL prizes ...
... so make the most of it (and it'll continue).
(end of motivational lecture!)
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
I have been thinking about this a lot actually....
1) It's been too cold where I am to be out capturing...and I am a whimp! I hate cold! LOL
2) Now that's it's warming up...I'm trying to think of 4 images to capture...I have 2 for sure in mind.... think think think!!! Just need to think of 2 more!
thanks for extending this!!! ;)
Kori =)
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
best i get out and about then:)
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
Got 3 out of the 4 photos already 'earmarked' but just waiting to see if I change my mind when I take something better tomorrow, or the next day. Expect others are doing the same.
When a closing date is given, and is getting close, I think we will see a flurry of activity.

Hi Geoff,
Keep in mind too that the entries aren't "cast in stone" - so I hope that you and/or others will feel free to change any images that you do put up.
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
Chris,
like #2. was that taken from a handglider, right? :D
Colin,
I'll think of pictures as well (well, if the office stops bugging me so much and the storms eventually stop...).
