Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
Welcome to Windsor and Eton:

The castle - still home to our Queen for a large part of the year.
It's easy to hop on such a bus (from many places) to pick up a commentaried tour of both Windsor and Eton

Plenty of unique shops and eateries - no need to go hungry

Or enjoy a walk along the riverside - maybe feed the swans, then wander across the bridge to Eton, famous for "the Boys school"

The chapel of Eton College - and this is just one example of a range of magnificent architecture Eton has to offer.
For those with a larger screen, select a fluid option on the forum, expand all the pictures and enjoy!
Hope to see you soon.

Attempting to link some photos of Salcombe, S. Devon, UK. A small coastal town. Quiet out of season but overwhelmed with holiday homers during August and public holidays.

Spring is boat maintenance time

Looking seawards (south) from the National Trust path around Snapes Point.

Looking up the harbour from the NT gardens. ( Not quite as sharp as I would like as it requires a really clear crisp day to overcome any haze. I may change this image).

Apart from the harbour entrance the town is surrounded by farmland.
Hope this works OK, all this moving between sites with copying and pasting has got me totally confused!
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
works fine Geoff & brings back happy memories from working at the Salcombe Hotel (focus of no3 for 'furriners) and slightly less happy of being flattened 40-0 by the Rugby club who misunderstood our club name and snuk in 1/2 of 1st 15 in to the extra B

Were you there, way back, when Mrs. Jo Oliver was in charge (perhaps in charge is the wrong term) or was it later when Mike Fink (originally German) was there. He lives on the Isle of Mull now but still returns occasionally.

I am seriously old Geoff, it would have been 1958± and not sufficiently elevated to know the gaffer; but enjoyed rowing over to the beach the other side in the afternoons and dancing to the 'story of a starry night' on starry nights (borrowed from Tchaikowsky)
Re: The CiC Guide to Planet Earth (New challenge with a REAL Prize!)
OK, that has settled the date, I was only 10 then. In those days it was owned by the Ryder family, and the Ferry Inn as well.
Probably around 20 years ago the hotel was converted into flats. As has happened with all the other hotels, even the Marine Hotel is set to follow soon. All holiday homes now, some let during the season but expensive. Very few B&B left. The Shipwrights pub has become the post office. Mostly clothes shops; but you can't get a boiler suit or a donkey jacket!
Recently I was given a Town Guide for the mid 1950's and it is a real eye opener.
I wonder how many other people will tell a similar story about their locality?

How about the Tides Reach? was a small hotel with classy food seawards on the Salcombe side.
Have just been wondering if I will be able to buy a pair of trews suitable for the fells in Keswick as last year I couldn't buy an anorak in Kendal except specialised (= 2x cost) for fell running , no pockets perhaps......
Come on guys, where are your photos, this is becoming a full of chat threads?!

Hi Bootsy,
All done.
Cheers, Dave

Harlem

Nothing is polished here. Everything shiny is dull. Everything white is stained grey. And the Neighborhood is included in the 15th district by a congressmen who holds four rent stabilized apartments claiming it fair and legal. He has a reelection rating of 90% and has held a congressional seat since 1970.

Luckily this was only a (sometimes) camera shy friend of mine, this is a similar feel one gets when photographing Harlem.

Walk through Harlem too late and everyone is tucked away. A lone chair is lit outside of an apartment building's entrance.

Harlem may not be the most beauty popping scene but when you grow up or live in it, there's no doubt you gain some pride and attachment. This young woman pauses while speaking on City College's Campus, rallying students to join a campaign to stop the the CUNY tuition hike and have CUNY reinstate CCNY's free tuition and open admissions.
If this contest is open on sunday I might try to switch one for a sunset shot I'll be taking on saturday. Cheers.
