Apparently, when interviewed after the race, George stated he thought he had a puncture, he didn't realise he'd lost the wheel and most of the rear suspension! Really in tune with his machine!

thanks steve,its not too bad at the pod,even run what ya brung can produce some good shots with plenty of vantage points, i used to race my sapp there years ago, these shots are from when i first got a dlsr so i didnt quite have the hang of panning,lol, heres a sapp on its haunches as the power gets delivered to the real wheels (the zebra stripes are retro)cheers martyn

I just looked back at your other post and had a thought that it would make a really nice series to hang on the wall if you could get shots of all the escort mk's to show the design changes.

Some nice shots in this thread. I haven't seen it before (don't know why I missed it:)).

I'll be in France next weekend to test our electric race car at the Michelin test track with our university race team. I think I'll have some time to do some shots.

The image is fine but depending on your PP skills it might benefit from applying a GND filter as the colours fade a little at the top, or at least some selective darkening to the tarmac in the background and clone out the yellow writing to keep attention on the beautiful car.

I have been using this image as a desk top screen image on my work computer and it is cropped a little differently as well as having quite a bit of the image covered up by icons. I will darken up the road surface ( or rather the pit surface) and I will clone out the No Parking sign and see if that makes a difference. I have to say that the fault that annoys me about the image is the point of focus. I hadn't used the auto-focus very much (and still don't very often.) In this case I did but should have manually focussed on the centre of the steering wheel, or maybe the driver's glove. On my screen the natural point your eye is drawn to is the Lotus badge on the steering wheel and unfortunately it is soft.
Still the car is beautiful ( I think it may have been sold to England now) and there were three other cars there which were driven in the Tasman main race which also were driven at that 1968 race meeting. They were a BRM, a Brabham (actually there were several including the World Champion cars driven by Jack, Dennis Hulme and one driven by Frank Gardner) and a gorgeous Ferrari with a V6 2.5 Litre engine which had been driven by Chris Amon. The photos are just opportunity shots not particularly well framed and shot with the light that was there when I was there (snapshots.) If you are interested I will post them.

Post away with any of the pictures. This thread was not intended to be a shrine to outstanding images, just to indulge in some inetrnal combustion related images and maybe to put the smell of castrol R in your nostrils:)

I wouldn't beat yourself up on the focus point, it makes the "Team Lotus" letters sharp which I thought was the intention. If the lotus badge on the steering wheel was the focus point it may not have shown up all that well because it is not as bright.

Yes it is. It's a Formula Student Single Seater. We're building our new car at the moment which should be done at the 19th of May. At our site www.universityracing.nl you can find the progress. The car we'll be doing tire tests with can be found at "Car -> 2010 URE 05e" at the left menu.

I'll hope I can come up with some nice shots, I'm not that experienced in Racing photography :D.

Wow, what a fantastic thing to be a part of. Is there a special class for electric powered cars then or do they compete with the more traditionally powered cars?

My technique with motorsports is commonly called "spray and pray" I think:D. My last trip out I came back with 1,800 shots and got about 150 keepers, with maybe 40 that I am really pleased with.

We race in the Formula Student Class. It's a class for low weight single seaters (<300 kg) only for student teams from all over the world. The goal of the competitions (besides racing and winning :)) is to give Automotive students a platform to work in teams to apply their theoretical knowledge an give a lot of room for innovation and experimentation.

In that Formula Student class the rankings are split in two parts: Electric engines and combustion engines (the cars race individual timed races). Up until 2 years ago we competed with a combustion engine (R600 engine from a Suzuki GSX Motorcycle, so that's close to 100 hp on 270 kg!) and we converted that car to a electrical powered race car last year. This year we're designing, building, testing and racing a new car, completely designed as an electrical powered car. Basically every year we develop an entirely new race car which is wonderful to be part of.

As I see your photographs in this thread I really think you've worked that "Spray and pray" technique very well. I really like them :)

I never photographed any moto x but quite fancy having a go. There is a track near me and I keep meaning to go there and try some shots with a flash right underneath them if the riders wouldn't mind:)

The previous electrical version has 2x30 kw, so about 85 hp and is a bit lighter than the combustion version. The one which is being built at the moment will have around 100 hp at 250 kg. We're aiming at 0-100 km/h in 3.5 s! At the moment the car does it in 3.9s.
The driver's are selected from inside the team. So it's just a student, just as any other part of the process will be executed by student. Maybe I'll try to get selected as a driver next season, but we'll see :).

By the way, don't you mind me filling your thread with anything but motorsport pictures?

You seem to be very close to the action at Cadwell. I am hoping to go there in the next few weeks to take some shots of a friend who races MR2's, he reckons Cadwell is one of the best tracks for photos.

Nice shot, perhaps a little soft, but maybe that happened on the re-size?

Thanks Steve, Cadwell is great for photography as there many places where you can get close to the action, only trouble is, most of these places you find yourself shooting into the sun untill afternoon this time of year but I`m sure a man of your skill would not find this a problem :D
