Woo! 1/800, then where the ISO and aperture goes?
I admitted that I never try 1/800 yet, as 1/200 to 1/300 already go beyond the end of F 2.8!

Am I dreaming if I press the exposure lock and aim at the dark skating jacket and don't let the big white background affect the exposure?
anyway, digital photo allows me to throw away 90% of photo which I captured and get a nice one! If it is a way to go for, why not train my eye and arm to pan and track it down!!.

Don't crop the white background out is want to let you see the overall light ( responding to aperture) , ISO (responding to noise) that you can comments on. The second photos is cropped and I think the noise is pretty noticible. Is it?
two photos with and without cropping can let you see all I got.
OH, got the real idea of full stop of ISO now. remeber the 100 and times it.
TC in lossing zoom is not that big a deal to me , as skating goes in a pretty predictable route. My fingers can master the zoom ring pretty well now. It is only the 200m don't allow me to reach out more!!
I read about the new 200-400mm with built in 1.4 TX too, fast enough? Need to blend in the new idea of built in 1.4 x TX!!
Is it I got more flexibility in separating the extender than built in? as least I can use it on different lens?
I think eventually, I will go to the 2x TX III.

please keep inputting so that I learn every blind spot before getting a 2xTXIII extender.

The 400mm f/2.8L Canon IS II lens is priced new at Adorama: $10,499.00 (USD). However, a used 400mm f/2.8L (previous model) can be had for a mere $6,600.00. I am sure that you will want a new one since it is such a bargain but its weight 135 oz. 0r 3850 g. might frighten you off.

I have been salivating about the 200-400mm f/4L IS 1.4x TC lens. which Canon is introducing, when I thought that selling my 400mm f/5.6L and 300mm f4L IS lenses plus my 1.4x TC might bring me somewhere near the price of the new lens. However, I just noticed a projection that this new lens will cost in the neighborhood of $6,000 USD. A bit rich for my blood!

However, I have an alternate plan for you... Ask your darling girl to do her skating a bit closer to where daddy is standing with the camera.

Hope this helps Bill. Interesting little exercise. Pretty good colour and clarity overall and I'd have to say I'd be bloody hard pressed to fork out 10K on a 400 or 500 mm prime based on these shots. For casual wildlife or sports photography IMO the 2X III extender would work really well. Obviously for fast action sports photography at a professional level I'd get the 400mm 2.8.

Gidday, I don't believe all that I read in reviews and forums and there is a LOT of whining about tele-extenders I do however take Photographs.

The top image is full frame width, the bottom an enlargement for scrutiny.
Note that the lens was stopped down only ⅓ stop from wide open.

Correct exposure, choosing the light type and correct Post Production especially sharpening is relevant.

I consider the EF70 to 200F/2.8L USM lens, to be the best of any of the four, first incarnation EF70 to 200 lenses, to use with the 2.0MkII tele-extenders.

I have not yet used the EF70 to 200F/2.8L IS MkII and the 2.0MkIII extender: when I do I will expect superior results.

Yes the 400/2.8L is expensive and also heavy: a 70 to 200 plus extenders IS NOT a replacement for it (or the 300/2.8), but whilst I have access to the 300 & 400/2.8 lenses, I consider both the x1.4 and x2.0 extenders very useful tools carry, daily with my 70 to 200/2.8L.
