It is not important if it is not very well composed - it would be better if it was - or if the focus is not exactly on her eyes, what is important is the meaning, the message within.

The shallow DOF is just fine here... Perhaps you could be more careful about your background and try to get something more homogenous.
I mean: Look at the green area, just above his head. If at the moment of shooting you would have been careful and placed that area behind his head, the portrait would be much better. OK. OK. Next time I know. :)

Why don't you try to bounce it over a wall or some area available around :) It makes a softer light...:)

I really like this portrait (and I'm sorry for him) ! expecially for the DOF.
