I like this. I tried once but did not succeed. Have to do it over and over ... :)
Blendings allow very creative images...
Here is more detail:
Duplicate the layer
Apply Guss blur enough to lose all the detail (depending on the resolution of the image) on the top layer
Set the blending to Overlay or Softlight, then adjust the opacity of the top layer to your taste (usually below 50-40 percent)
Make a mask and uncover some of the underlying layer over the areas you like more detail (in this case I did for face and part of the shirt)
Voi la!

EDIT, feeling the need to suggest something useful as well, I might suggest blurring the lower right corner, the shirt sleeve folders are quite sharp and attract attention.
Cheers,

Cheers,
Thanks, Dave! You guessed right: he was watching something on TV.
Good point about the sharp corner. This is taken with the Canon 85 f1.2 at a very shallow depth of field and that area is actually on the same plane as the right eye! I make sure I blur that area.
Cheers!

Hello Ali, thank you for posting here :D
Ali, the portrait is really really well done. The sepia tone is very nice. :)
And ... the moment. Yes, the moment.
We know that our young man has the habit of behaving like a model for his father. He probably saw the camera, but didn't care about it.
I am sure this is a reason why he kept his concentration on what was going on the TV screen.
:)

I'm beginning to love taking portraits than anything else!

I like this shot, the only thing I can say is that the crop is a bit too tight and the face is too bright, although at least on my monitor, does not look blown out. Other than that, specially the detail on the hair, is very well done!
Thanks for posting here :)

Hello Chriss :)
Yes, like Ali said thank you for posting here :)
I agree with Ali in all aspects.
However, I like best the image I picked on your site even if the background is not so uniform as it could be. But it looks pretty good to me and I do like it very much.
It is an informal shot the way I like to do. Perhaps the crop is not the best and I would probably cut more up near the middle of her arms. I would have to try... :)
The light is also very pleasing. Gary Fong thing ?

The lighting are just recessed incandescent in a hospital bedroom hehehe. They were visiting us in the hospital that day and she had her hair done that day too so i just had to take a quick shot. I wish I had a better background though :(
Maybe after I finish my house studio I get more control on back drop and lighting then I would have better results hehehehe. (Thats if I get start the remodeling process on my bonus room.)

Thanks all - I am delighted that at last all my learning seems to have come together - except colour! I didn't notice it was so blue until it was pointed out so here is a warmer version.
Also been pointed out that it would be better if I was looking down on her slightly - or I think at direct eye level rather than slightly 'up the nose'. Still happy though.
Thanks for the nice comments :D
