The only straight-forward constant in this hobby/business is that it will cost you 127.5% of what you can afford. :D

Not really, but I've heard it said, at times, that it sucks to be around me. Might have been my ex that said that so you may need to take that with a grain of salt. ;)
The damn thing was working fine and then Windows developed a mind of it's own. I will see Bill Gates in hell and spend my eternity making his afterlife miserable.

They say a yacht is a hole in the water in which you throw money.
I am sure you smart people can come up with a similar saying for photography.

Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw ... "I still miss my ex, but my aim is improving"!

Unfortunately, Bill has been gone for a few years now.

Sometimes I'm using 5 AND a couple of reflectors!
Awwwww Colin, how you love to spend what little cash I have. I only want to do some humble florals and still lifes, I was hoping one studio light and a reflector would be an improvement on what I have now - No?

Hi Wendy,
Possibly - just depends on what you want to do with the backgrounds. Black you'll be fine - white you won't. Grey you'll probably be OK.
One of the biggest "gotchas" in portraiture is "why doesn't my white background look white" and the answer is "because the foreground light is falling away) ... ie you need to light it seperately. Having just said that however, you can often use an external speedlite type flash to do that (as can you use them in place of more expensive strobes if the subject isn't moving) (you just hit them with multiple shots and/or multiple flashes from the same flash unit, if you get what I mean).
