Hi Paul, I realize this is a dumb question but have you checked you monitor on a gray scale? It may be that you simply have it set too bright and everything that you process is therefore much darker than it should be.
As a test, shoot a few shots in jpg (in sRGB) and have them printed straight from the card. If they are light enough you'll have your answer.

Make sure the connection between your computer and the printer is good, if not the problem might be in printer drivers or the USB port drivers. the irregularity might be due to the paper quality, I use Matte Photo Paper. moreover, verify Printer Settings, Try a Printer that Uses Pigment Inks. probably use Professional Laser Printing., and Preserve Your Print with a Sealer.

Newbies often don't realize that the date stamp for posts is at the top left of each one, in the pale blue bar. It's worth checking, as the old ones aren't removed.
