I agree, it is very seldom that I would use a photo SOOC. I'd rather give it a touch up in a post processing application just because I think I can improve my image. <grin>

I forgot to mention to Geoff about the tools but the following comment also applies to you.
The tools in the warehouse are rarely used these days. In fact the area is a big mess of different items. Ever touched or moved. It still holds other tools, quite different from one another.
Wooden ships were repaired in Setúbal but not anymore. Now the work is done some 50 kilometers away.
Sandy, SOOC: never. :) They look flat and after a small work on them they may be interesting...

Excellent photo of the boats, Antonio.

The mention of salt reminds me that many years ago boats from here loaded salt in Portugal and Spain then took it to the fishing fleet working off Newfoundland. Dried and salted fish would be brought back to Portugal/Spain where another cargo of wine or fruit would be carried back to England. At the end of the fishing season those boats would also land their fish there and load with wine for the voyage to England.

The last record we have of this trade was in the 1890's but the topsail schooners which were built here continued with the fruit trade until the late 1920's. The last boat was the Lady St. John's which continued trading with Oporto until 1930.

Portugal has a long and painful story of fishing ships in the Newfoundland and up there in the North.
Young men were sent there in small boats where they suffered the hardness of the cold and they were lost in the sea.
They were supposed to go to the fishing season or go to fight in what was then, the colonies in Africa.

I did think about 'chopping down' that tree, Antonio, but without it the image balance changes and the man with those boxes on a trolley becomes the centre of attention instead of being part of a wider scene.

ps. That is an interesting video about the Newfoundland cod fishery and the information matches the research which we have down regarding English boats.

The main difference in operation seems to have been that French, Portuguese and Spanish fishermen usually worked from their ship base where the catch was stored in salted sea water. So trips had to be shorter due to the quicker deterioration of those fish which were known as 'green cured fish'.

English fishermen operated from a shore base where fish were dried as well as being salted so they had a long storage period. There is some mention that this could be as long as a year if the product was kept dry. Consequently, 'green cured' fish were quickly consumed at the unloading ports while the dry English fish could be transported inland. But, people who have eaten it say they weren't keen on the taste, although there is still a specialised market for it even now.

When I was a boy, shortly after the wartime shortages, I can remember it was still on sale in this country and went by the common name of towrag.

There is a book Fish into Wine by Peter Pope which looks into the history of this subject, from around 1600, in great detail. I do have this book but at nearly 500 pages I have never had sufficient time to fully read it.

He posted today - Saturday - an operation where a great piece of wood has been heated and placed in location being this the boat itself.
He has been taking some shots of the hole work most probably with his cell phone.
He is a bout 74 or 75 and has always been a passionate lover of the sea and traditional boats. He has been working in boats for a long time now mainly after his professional work as engineer.

He is a fine guy ! I like him ! :)

It would be easy to extend the sky a bit more, but what about the sides if you want to keep the same size ratio?

Only the top of that net hauler is tight so I think you can get away with keeping it unaltered. Nice composition.

They obviously work their fishing gear over the port side, like French fishermen, while over here we work on the starboard side. We always do everything differently from the rest of the world. ;)

I have made some minor adjustments

* Decreased the saturation of reds in the scene which I found to be too intense
* The same for the blues in certain specific areas
* Increase the area of the sky on the top :p

Lots of blue in your image. Is the area generally colored in blue? From the water or sky perhaps?
