If you work on an adjustment layer it is possible to use filters such as dehaze, or many others, but selectively apply the results by masking so any excessive areas can be subdued.

Here is my alternative edit by simply using a Curves layer.

But when I compare the original image, as a PSD file, against this internet size JPEG there is a lot of softening and colour/contrast loss with the JPEG version.

These images really need to be viewed with the Lightbox view to see the full differences.

This made me curious, so I tried three edits with PS/ACR:

1. Just bring the black point up and the white point down with a curves adjustment.

2. Add a slight curve to the above:

3. Dehaze, plus some increase in brightness (exposure slider) to compensate for darkening:

it seems to me that the second is the best. The Adobe dehaze (can't speak to RT) alters colors more.

Maybe I should post the original straight from camera shot.

You seem to be thinking along rather similar lines to me, Dan.

I also edited another shot for a 4 x 5 ratio which concentrated more on the tractor.

Looking for something different to photograph without leaving my garden. I tried a low angle shot with a merge of 4 focus points.

It works OK. It is well done.

And then there is the summer time problem. :)

That one has a rotatable head so I can adjust it for any variations and once in a while I update it to current time. I suppose sundials run late for part of the year and fast for the other half. I never thought about that before now.

My original shots showed the full dial face but I decided that a slightly tighter crop looked better to me.

After retirement, at one point I decided to live by Local Solar Time. So I set my watch to 12 o/c at local solar noon, adjusting it thus every couple weeks or so. The watch did have a bezel obligingly marked in hours which I set to Central Standard or Central Daylight Time.

Week 19 - Loading rubble. There are three building sites currently working within a few hundred yards of my house. I tried a few quick shots of this lorry loading rubble and thought I had everything under control but when I saw the results on my computer I realised my settings weren't ideal.

The light was poor and I wanted sufficient focus depth but I ended up with too slow a shutter speed for the subject movement, even with rather slow movement. Also, a couple of shots had slightly faster shutter speed but I was concentrating on getting the crane operator and grab in the best position and lost part of the wheels/road which didn't really look right. A bit like photographing a person in full length but missing out their shoes. :rolleyes:

This is the only keeper. I must take more care in reviewing my in camera shots before assuming everything is OK and moving on.

7D with Tamron 24-70 lens. 1/160 F11 Iso 400 plus a few editing tweaks.

Geoff, this is a fun shot. I've looked at it full size on my main monitor (not iPad!) and, to my mind, it captures the feel of the scene.

It must be noisy with so much construction/demolition nearby. I was surprised that the workman wasn't wearing a hard hat. Is that usual? (i.e., no hard hat)

These guys do whatever they want when they are out on their own. Probably a hard hat somewhere in the cab. Maybe it is somewhere safe to keep his sandwiches. ;)

Noise level varies depending on what jobs are being done but they all seem to go home around 4 pm. Road blockage in that narrow lane is a bit of a problem but I am OK because I have a lay by on the other side of my house which faces onto a 'proper road'.

Here, these guys also do what they want regarding their hard hats...

Perhaps it would have been a bit more interesting if we could see the face of the operator.

These days I rarely or never chimp the back of the camera, as I careful frame and compose before pressing the shutter.
Perhaps you can try the same procedure saving you some time.

That was the problem, Antonio.

I was carefully watching for the position of the grab and hoping the operator would look sideways while still worrying about framing on the sides where I wanted to include stuff like that brush leaning against the wall.

Trouble is, I have reached an age where my tired little brain can only cope with a limited number of things all happening at the same time. :rolleyes:

Landscapes are so much easier, with plenty of thinking time included. Today I took some shots of a very tall crane working at the other site so I will show that in another post in a few days after I have had time to do the editing work. But there are also dozens of insect images from today which also require editing and identification.

And choosing and editing always takes lots of time !
