CiC is a resource strongly focused towards learning, no matter what your current level of knowledge, skills and experience. As well as these forums, where you can engage in discussion, ask questions and seek comment and criticism on your pictures, CiC has a comprehensive range of tutorials that, by common consent, are amongst the most sensible and straightforward that you can find anywhere. Remember to have a look on the tutorials and techniques pages which you can access from the menu bar.
And finally, the Mod team thought it might be a useful addition to CiC to have in-house access to some selected video tutorials. You can find them in the Community Lounge forum under 'Photography Video Tutorials'.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello from the "Great Pacific North-Wet",
My name is Carl and I'm a somewhat frustrated amateur photographer who has gone over the years from Pentax K1000 SLR's to P&S and then to Canon 20D and now, believe it not, back to P&S (though I still have all previous cameras). A lot of my frustration probably stems from my impatience when it comes to studying post-processing, especially Photoshop CS2. (I'm also a Mac user and just bought Aperture 3, which seems to be a dog on my MacBook.)
The only subject I'm not really interested in is probably portraits, mainly because I am very reluctant to point a camera at people. I'm fortunate to live in an unusually photogenic region, so there is no shortage of amazing landscapes and natural attractions. (A small herd of elk just crossed our driveway.)
I was attracted to this forum and website when I noticed the subtitle, "a learning community". I've tried a couple of other photography forums and soon became discouraged by their often harsh criticism and ego-driven competitiveness. I'm not trying to be a "great" photographer but I would like to improve my skills as I enjoy it so much.
The photograph I include here is of a street dog we rescued in Mexico. I call it, "Poco's Great Leap" as it captures his reaction when he was first introduced to the Northwest woods. It was also one of the first shots taken with the 20D and in spite of some obvious problems with focus, remains my all-time favorite.
cheers, Carl

Hi Carl,
I'm sure we can do better than the other forum's :)
It takes a lot of luck (subject against background) in addition to skill, to get a shot like "Poco's Great Leap" perfect. If I view large, I can sort of see what you mean about tthee focus, but it isn't that far off, if at all - I think Poco's fuzziness might be down to the 1/250s shutter speed (i.e. motion blur). This is a nice shot, full of Action with a capital A :)
Anyway, for best C&C, we have a couple of forums for that, post this, or other images in a new thread there.
Do be sure to read post #1 which will help you get started here in the forums. If you're unclear on forum ettiquette; there is a Code of Conduct in the FAQ here

Hello members of the Forum,
My name is Francis Annett and my first photos were taken on a Brownie Box when I was ten. Nowadays I am lucky to have a Canon 500D which is put to use here in south west Turkey where my wife and I have been living for five years since I retired.
I look forward to exploring the Forum and the web-site further and to working out how to manage the uploading. At the moment I am trying to take night pictures of the stars, as the night sky is so clear here in our village.
I look forward to meeting other members.
Francis Annett :)

Hello CiC community ! I live in São Paulo - Brasil, and my interesting is landscape, night lights, and flora and fauna pictures. Macro is very interesting, but my conventional digital camera doesn't allow me so much closer details. I'm just an amatur photographer, and that why I want to learn more at this forum with professional photographers around the world.
Here, just a fews of my samples:

Not entirely sure if i did this before... so thought i would go ahead and intro myself anyways. I am Sandeep. I am from Delhi, India. Friend of mine suggested the webpage, and its been awesome to browse through and try techniques with my camera and photoshop that have been suggested here. Hoping to learn much more. Got to visit Cambridge a few days ago, only for a couple of hours though. Hoping to come back there with a few lenses and plenty of hours to take my fill of the beautiful city it is.

My name is Patrick and I am from Bartlett,Tn, right outside Memphis. My wife got me Canon EOS Rebel XS for Christmas to replace my Minolta 35mm. I bought my first 35mm, Pentax, while stationed in Germany in 1971. I have been taking pictures for awhile, but with this new digital I see I have a lot to learn. Looking forwards to exchanging information with you all.

My Name is Louis Weijl. I'm a 50 year old Dutchman and Israeli living in Israel. In my life I had several careers. First, I graduated form a Hotel Management College in Bavaria, Germany. Upon returning home in Rotterdam, Holland, for over 10 years, I owned my own restaurant. In '95 I emigrated to Israel and worked in odd jobs in the hotel business once more.
In 1999 I did several courses for technical writing and worked for 5 years as a freelance technical writer. Just for the money....
Then, I finally gave in and fulfilled my dream! I studied photography at the Academy for Geographical Photography; a photo-journalistic education. Since, I try to break into the market as a pro photographer.
