Day 25: October 2010 PAD

Another gray day but I was up early before sunrise to feed the birds. We have an incadescent flood light to light our rear door area, patio and associated yard. I noticed that the leaves that fell during the night looked particularly brilliant so I took a few pictures. Here's one.

It's that time of year again when the residents of Windsor get to enjoy this in the early evening at the weekends. Shot yesterday (I confess) and saved for today ;)

I'll try again with a wider lens, at 200iso (or less), no UV filter and a tripod :o

This is actually a landscape crop from a portrait orientation capture - one of the few not spoiled by camera shake. Never did get the hang of predicting 'the tall' from 'the wide' salvoes, hence the wrong way on this :(

No way it could be shot from the venue itself without a fisheye lens, which I don't have. This is a mile and a bit away.

I had a lovely lunch today with Raylee and her partner. The first time I have met anyone over the internet. They were down from Canberra enjoying sunny Melbourne.

Canon 50D, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, f/8, 1/60s, ISO 100, two flashes in a lightbox-style setup. Full EXIF, PAD slideshow.

An adapter to let me put three flashes on a light stand. Pretty simple to make with a hacksaw and a drill. It's 1x1 inch steel tube with 1/4 inch threaded rod for the flash attachment. The part to attach to the light stand is a thumbscrew locked to a female-female coupler.

Since I don't use Pocket Wizards, my wiring is simpler than Colin's: I put one receiver on it here to show the concept. I have three Cactus receivers, and of course, I can put my 430EX on with my 580EX, and it fires just fine. I use the little stand that comes with the flash: the stand has a 1/4 inch thread in the bottom.

In the picture here, it's on my tabletop tripod.

Thanks very much to all for the comments, made me laugh.

The cat is called Peaches - he should have been called Cream, but that’s a long story - anyway, several years ago he turned up and decided he was going to move in with us. At that time, we had 19 cats. Peaches was a thug (a true supervillain cat LOL) he would fight with all the other cats and there was no way you could stroke him without loosing blood.

It took a few years to calm him down and now he will tolerate being stroked, but not for long…but at least the first time he lashes out it will be to box with several rapid punches, not shred my hand with his razor sharp claws.

So many great photos for day 25, well done all!

Well spotted Pete! That is definitely Portia's younger sister, Hortense. We all knew it would end badly when she ran off with that dashing cad, Captain Bothersham-Ffyffe. And to think that she ended up in Steptoe Esquire's second-hand yard in Brixton-sur-mer is simply too sad for words. Portia, who is now somewhere on the high seas east of Suez, will be appraised of the situation by the speediest carrier pigeon. No doubt she will make an appearance before the end of the month to offer her unconditional forgiveness and beg "Hortie" to return to the loving bosom of her family.

Hi Rick,

Just be aware that the mini-stands, and feet of the 580EX (not 580EX II) are brittle plastic (don't ask me how I know about the "brittle" bit :().

Having broken 1 umbrella (which acted as a EXCELLENT shock absorber by the way), 3 pocket wizard TT5s, and 1 mini-stand in 24 hours, I upgraded to using the 1/4" threads, with metal all round. I also mounted the PWs seperately to reduce the torque on the mount should something go "horribly wrong".

After enjoying a relaxing lunch with Peter, we walked back to the city and passed Flinders Street Station.
