People have commented, very appropriately, on the the light and lighting. But I'd also highlight composition. It's different and it's made up of very strong lines. The pier and the cliff complement each other and pull us from the front to the back of the image. The horizon is a very bold back-stop to the image. The line of buildings sweep us across the frame.
So, a number of separate elements arranged together to give us a striking image.
I'll second that plus the fact that almost every other shot of this pier that I have seen is taken from a viewpoint straight down the funicular railway. So full marks for finding something different.

Thanks John, with this image my main concern was to get a line on the moon rise and to include the pier within the frame anything else was a bonus. The lights and carriage of the funicular just add that little bit extra to the image. I too have images straight down the funicular and pier ;)
