I replicated the streaking (running paint) you saw by extreme adjustment to the luminance slider. Generally this slider is used pretty conservatively.

There is another way to do selective color adjustment in PS through the Image/adjustment/selective color sliders. These have some advantage as they allow one to make individual color adjustments on the white, neutral and black areas of the image as well as the standard colors. Increasing the amount of blue in the white (carefully) would allow you to tint the sky and reflection slightly.

Thanks Judith. I did make rather large adjustments. Please note I don't have PS only Lightroom which is not as comprehensive as PS.

Here I was trying a composition: framing the area of orange sky within the curved branches of a fallen tree. Exposure was taken before sunrise and it was still somewhat dark.

How fun to see you playing! For your third one you ask if you have gone too far--maybe--however the thing you might consider is that if the sun is so yellow, perhaps the overall color balance of the image needs to tilt a little more to the yellow. When you try this, using the color balance slider, you may find that the other work you did is only a little bit over the top.

Initially I thought these seemed a bit too 'pastel' and rather flat; but that all changes in the full quality Lightbox view.

Hi Joe:) I find #2 and #3 better compositionally. I think yellows are a bit too much in #3. When you push the color sliders too much ,sometimes the edges of the clouds become too visible and they don't look very natural. I think this is the case in #3. Sometimes applying some noise reduction to the sky and/or not sharpening the sky might help.

Thanks Judith. Please see above for the changes I have made to #3.

Have not been able to track the areas with fantastic colours this autumn, so I decided to grab this image while it is still there. I will probably go back to this spot and if the colours are good I may post this again. I bumped up the yellows using the HSL function.

If post #53 is meant to be a record of the autumn colours, why is it predominantly sky and water (with the sky reflected again)?

OK, perhaps I'm being mean (sorry), but I do this myself; get stuck in one mode of thinking - and you've been shooting a lot of early morning skies lately - just wondering whether you've got in to a habit? ;)

I think it needs cropping: a much lower top edge and raised lower edge, making a very wide aspect ratio (almost a pano), using more 'rule of thirds' than equal halves, then bump up the clarity. Perhaps a bit more HSL yellows, oranges and reds too, you can be more 'robust' with the fine detail HSL than the smooth transitions in skies.

My interest was in the colours but especially in the reflections, hence the water and its accompanying reflection of the sky. I agree I could loose some of the sky and will do that; am also thinking about de-saturating the sky and will see how that looks.

Not a habit. Just very little else of interest to shoot in the time frame I have available now. An interesting sky would have improved the image but I could not wait for sunrise.

I had been cautious with the HSL sliders, but I can see being more 'robust' in this scene can be beneficial.
