    Fallen Jetty

I had passed this structure many times previously but resisted shooting it because it's simply blocks of concrete and pine polls. But tonight I had my gear with me and there was nothing else to fire away at

It's another of those scenes where there are so many possibilities for different PP work, these both have minimal compared to some I have done and don't like. What I should have done was to get lower I think and have the structure breaking the horizon?

    No 1. The full scene
    30s, f/10, 28mm
    Fallen Jetty

    No 2. In tighter
    30s. f/11, 60mm

I like these Grahame - you have captured beauty in decay. For me, I prefer the first image as I prefer the composition and the sense of emptiness. It may benefit from a slight crop at the top but it's fine as is.

I like the shooting angle - any lower and you would lose a lot of the water.

I think the first image is an absolute killer image, it is perfect...except for one thing.
Using longer glass and photo-merging the images would have allowed for a larger print.
    It does deserve it.

I really like the first one. Very beautiful. It may have lost some detail in the upload in the lower left corner.

    Hi Grahame

First of all both picture are great. They both have the dimmed colors, I like. But as the others i like the first one the best. What I like about that picture, is because you can see the whole landscape.
One thing I would have changed, would be the dark shadows. Personally I would have lifted the shadows a bit in PP

Both are nice but I think the first one stands out.

    Thank you Simon.

I'm quite surprised that the consensus of opinion seems to be a preference for No 1 and to be honest I gave this view no real thought or time at all whilst there. That was the only shot I took at that focal length and position whereas I have many very similar to No 2 taken at different exposure times, focal points and apertures. I will go back tonight, weather permitting, and concentrate on wide framing of the scene

As for cropping, I had not bothered but agree a slight bit from the top may help.

    Thanks William.

I'm not sure if it would be possible to take a set for reliably photomerging at 30 second exposure times varying with the quickly changing light that you get 25 minutes after sunset, seems a bit of a challenge

I'm presently working with an uncalibrated monitor (seems a recent Win 10 update affected things) so that may be the cause but to be honest I did very little work to No 1 so a revisit is warranted.

    Thanks Kaare.

I'll have another look at the shadow areas but be careful not to make it look overdone

    Hi Grahame,

I like both of these images but given your title I think that #1 appears more "fallen" and deserted than #2 does. The colours are very nice too.

Couple of nice ones, Grahame. IMO the first one needs to be cropped a bit to eliminate the gap between the end of the jetty and bottom of frame.

Interesting in the US a jetty can't fall because it never stands. In this image we would call the rocks a jetty or possibly in this case a groin. The pilings are what's left of what we call a dock or pier. And we claim to speak the same language

I did a crop at the bottom of No 1 Dan to anchor the end of the jetty but for some reason prefer it as is but I'm not sure why.

Yes this may have been a groin but it's the only one I have seen along this length of shore so I'm going to do some investigation to find it's history.

As for technique I cheated. I put the camera in manual and lined up the little meter to centre position that it suggested was right, pressed the button and waited This technology is amazing
