Re: Number of shots taken with camera
Try the Panasonic site and look for the operating manual for the particular camera model. I use a Panasonic Lumix LX1 and on page 107 of the manual there is a complete description of the filing sytem. The folder numbers start at 100 and the contents of each folder is 999. A new folder is created after this number is reached .It can all be reset at any time. Thereis a little programme called PHOTOme that gives more information about photos than I'll ever need including shutter activations, but I've only used it for DSLR. I'll give it a go for the compact .
Re: Number of shots taken with camera
Thanks Peter: I have the manual and have skimmed through for the filing information. It is probably there. I will have to look closer. I've sent an email to Panasonic Support, but don't know if I will get an answer or not.
What you said about the file system seems pretty logical. That would mean 5911 shots on this camera assuming that it has not been reset. I don't suppose there is any way to tell.
Let me know if your program works on the compact. Sounds like a handy thing to have.
Thanks again
Wendy
Re: Number of shots taken with camera
Wendy,
Perhaps Panasonic use the same system for all of their cameras. That would make sense, but don't count on it. I doubt that resetting the camera is something that is done by many people. Most casual users would be oblivious to the filing system. 5911 is not a lot of work for a compact or any camera for that matter. regards..........I'll let you know about the program results.
Re: Number of shots taken with camera
Wendy, you could also consider using Photome. If you click on an un-changed jpeg, and open Photome, it tells you lots about your camera.

Re: Number of shots taken with camera
Wendy, I checked Photome with a shot from my Panasonic but it doesnt show shutter actuations. It does for my Pentax DSLR but looks like no go for compacts.
Re: Number of shots taken with camera
Thanks for the link Kit, I will check it out.

Thanks Peter, I will see if I get a reply from Panasonic. Otherwise, I will have to rely on the information from the owners. Photome sounds like a useful program though I will give it a try.
Re: Number of shots taken with camera
Wendy,
There is a reference to a bunch of EXIF readers on http://digital-photography-school.co...ter-actuations.
Goog luck.
Re: Number of shots taken with camera
Thanks Mart. If I don't find what I am looking for with Photome I will check them out. Normally I use Kuso. Jeffery's viewer that Dave H. linked to in this thread is very comprehensive, and I don't hold out much hope of finding what I am looking for if it does not show up in Jeffery's Exif. I'll keep trying though, thanks for the link

Re: Number of shots taken with camera
It has a reset function in the menu's:
Quote:
• Reset File No. in the camera?
Yes/No

So it is a bit academic plus I read somewhere that some software that claims to check actuations actually does no more than take a guess based on file numbers.
The best way to check the number of actuations is to intelligently guess it by age and kind of use, it should be possible to check the age somehow such as receipt, and kind of use by the kind of people your buying from. :)
Re: Number of shots taken with camera
Very practical advice Arith, and probably the best route to take. I will talk to the kids who used the camera as soon as I get a chance. Apparently they just like using the camera on their phones so they did not bother too much with this one after the novelty wore off.

I would say this is correct. I have been using the camera for a bit and when it got up to 1000 the folder number changed to 106 and the count started over.
So, unless the previous owner reset the counter at some point. Then I am going to asssume that the camera now has 6022 shots. That does not seem like a lot. It's a moot point now anyway, because I bought it. :) Interseting to see how it names the files though.
