First attempt at shooting the "Night Sky"...

You know, each night I wake up at around 1 or 1:30am and go outside and look at the sky when it is clear (which will be tomorrow night as the weather guy said...) and compared it to when we were in Florida where the nights are really dark dark dark and you can see everything like the stars are all bunches and bunches of them. Here, if the star is not that bright then they are spaced apart. I was tempted to just take shot one night despite and always ended up going inside instead, head down in disappointment most of the time, thinking that ours over here looks like a joke compared to the one I witnessed in Florida. One of these nights when it is clear up there, I might give it a try here...if I cannot wrangle a trip to Sun n Fun next month at Lakeland...I have a 200mm...why not?

I will look into DeepSkyStacker in the early morning when I wake up (again...) Will be interesting...

Izzie, I found that my camera picked up stars that I couldn't see by eye. So you might be surprised :)

Thats not a bad effort Bernard, the stars need to be a bit more prominent and I assume they are street/building lights are a bit distracting.

I do like the faint silhouette of the mountain.

What settings did you use?

Cheers Matt,manual mode,f3.2,ISO400,Bulb,was trying for auroa borealis no luck ,thought I would give it a go,very spooky with owl te whit te whooing in background....:eek:

Haha I suppose you are saver on top of a mountain in the dark than in a packed city centre these days though!

How long was the exposure?

Before things changed I was quite an active amateur astronomer. Even when there are city lights the moon, planets, and the more colourful stars can be nicely shot. Honest.

NAW,poor pensioner out in the country though...roughly 8 seconds exposure..

Thanks for the encouragement, Matt...I went out just a while ago and the sky is partly covered with clouds so maybe tomorrow...:(
