I think you have a much stronger image now. I feel that your cleaning up the "half birds" works well and I find that your second version is the better of the two. There is still a touch of green left, especially at the top right edge.
As for B&W versus colour; I personally prefer the almost monochrome look of the colour version,
If it were my image I might be tempted to see if a very light vignette might not further strengthen the image. It should be almost imperceptible, but just enough to move the viewer's eyes away from the edges of the image.
