Love the colours too, Mark! Worthwhile project...I like the sepia of the second one and the colour and rusts in #1. Looks like an old caterpillar...

I really like your theme- abandoned machinery fascinates me too. Interesting crop in #1. Not that I know much about these things, but I wonder if a deepening of the shadows might add something to the story?

Thanks Izzie and yes it is a Caterpillar fifteen from probably the 1930s

Thanks Frank, That thing was tough to get a decent exposure on. Due to the angle to the sun it was sitting. with all the holes the sun shines through.:)

Thanks Janis, They are somewhat clearer despite being handheld. Maybe the image stabilizing was on and causing problems on the first set on the tripod?

Sorry, Mark; should have been clearer myself. ;) What I meant was that your photographic intent is clearer with this week's set; we viewers are better able to see and appreciate what you saw.

LOL they still look a little clear in the technical sense. could just be me though.:)

Mark, I like the direction this is going in I did a bit of machinery close up at a autumn show here that hosted some historic farm machinery - its facinating stuff and your captures are good. I look forward to seeing where you go with this

Week three.
Both of these were pretty bland in color. I thought they might work in black and white So I shot them for the conversion.

The background is kind of busy but I thought it sort of fit the industrial theme.

Mark these are excellent shots. #1 seems to have a bit of noise; have to loo closely at lytebox so that I don't make a mistake about that thin wire that I thought was a spider web. #2? -- the pulley: I think it is good, but my favourite is the third one -- no mistake. To incorporate that in the machinery shot is an excellent decision. I love the texture of the rope (twine?) and the moss. Wonder how long the object been there, one can only guess...

yeah #1 has a little noise. It is under a hood on the dark side of an old forklift. Being B&W I thought it sort of resembled film grain.
I think that is a spider web in #2. I started to clone it out but decided It is part of the aged look.:)
#3 I thought was sort of interesting. This winter started off pretty wet and we have moss in places I have never seen before. The rope has been there a good 20 years. It used to keep a winch line on a boom truck from swinging.

I like the first one but it raises questions, Mark. At the top it appears to be a reflection of a water surface that is under or somewhat behind the device. Then, when I look at the bottom, I think I see a little fish - but the two background pieces don't fit together?

I know. I'm supposed to be looking at the gear and not the background! Sorry...

LOL the reflection is sunlight. I think the fish is a dried leaf. maybe I should try a different time of day and a fishing pole?:D

Week four I have been experimenting with Black and white conversions. I processed the images in ACR the same as colored images. then imported them to Photoshop CC Then converted them to greyscale and added some tones to them.

#1. Is a Quadtone using black a warm gray and two cool grays. I shot it crooked because I liked the look:)

#3. Is a Standard conversion is ACR with a lot of contrast added.

I am going to do more playing with tuotones, tritones and quadtones in the future.
