Re: 18-55mm Nikon Replacement?
I too am surprised that the Nikon 17-55mm has not featured more in this thread than a few odd recommendations.
It is a really good DX lens and is head and shoulders above the 18-55mm, although that is reflected in the price.
I only sold mine when I went over to FF and replaced it with the Nikon 14-24mm and a 24-70mm. As a colleague still shoots with one, I have on odd occasions swapped it with him and I think it is a lens that is well worth the extra money and wouldn't recommend the 18-55mm even when offered as a kit lens package: better to upgrade at the outset.
Re: 18-55mm Nikon Replacement?
Reviving this thread to let those that provided a lot of good food for thought that I finally decided to purchase the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 (throughout the zoom). It arrived today so I will be taking it out over the weekend.
Originally I decided to get the newer version of the same lens that broke (18-55 3.5-5.6) but when it arrived I was disappointed in the build and the heft of the lens. I gave it a whirl though and wasn't overwhelmed by the IQ. Some soul searching later and thinking long and hard about my original desire for a faster lens led me to return it, double my cost , and push the buy button on the Sigma.
I am thinking of it as a longer term investment and hope I will be satisfied with it for some time to come.
Thanks again to all who provided advice. It is appreciated!
I will be sure to share some images soon...
Re: 18-55mm Nikon Replacement?
You're gonna just love the constant f/2.8 capability when you're in situations that allow you to take advantage of it. My wife's variable-aperture zoom drives me nuts when I'm seeking to use the largest available aperture.

Don't think about it as spending money. You're just re-directing your resources. That lens will pretty much hold its value.

Yes, money can neither be created nor be destroyed, it can be transformed from one lens to other ;)

But isn't the depreciation loss where all that dark matter in the universe comes from :D
Glad you're sorted now Shane

Thanks guys! I'm off to First Friday tonight to test out the lens. First Friday is a local festival of sorts where all the galleries and restaurants in Chinatown stay open late. Plenty of people and street performers are out and about so it should be a good test of the wide aperture :)

Don't be surprised if you start shooting at one particular focal length for the next few days. Finding the point (focally) where you feel most comfortable can be a lot of fun.
