I do think the idea of machine gun etiquette is outdated. There are lots more cities that are far more dangerous, although even in NYC there is trouble if you wanna go looking.
Even at 1am in central Manhattan I have seen photographers out with some pretty expensive kit and getting no second glances including down in the subway.
Not that I am advocating that is a good thing to do there or in any other city.

I think in any city it's all about knowing where to walk or stray. In San Francisco and Vancouver I could be in a heavily tourist area and walk one block away and you are in the middle of skid row. Not necessarily the most dangerous place but you get the idea.
