Re: Before The Storm
I definitely prefer your 2nd version, David. You might still add a touch of dodging to the brighter edges of the lower cloud layer, and maybe even try to lighten the snow on the mountainside. I love the yin/yang juxtaposition of the contours of the foreground against the mountains-beautifully balanced and well sighted.

I'm no expert on either genre either, but I like it - you've captured the light and mood well in my opinion.

Re: Before The Storm
Such a great eye to capture this scene! I'm going to go against the crowd and mention that I prefer the first one but would like a version that is somewhere between the first and second one.
The one aspect that continues to nag at me in every version is that the bright area of the clouds pulls my eye to the very top of the frame. That area has less impact in the first version and I think explains why I prefer that version.

Re: Before The Storm
Thank's Mike,to be honest, it was an opportunist shot,i was looking for the Little Owl from another post.
I had on Canons 100-400l lens when i came across the scene, steadied my mono-pod,framed the shot quickly,at 100mm(who says you need a wide-angle;)) as the light was constantly changing, and the storm was moving in fast, click, shot in the bag!
When i got back home, in all the excitement i never changed the aperture from shooting the owl:( still at f/6.3:mad:,so i guess all things considered,i have been rather lucky:D

Re: Before The Storm
Love this image. I must agree with Mike though, like the 1st shot more, because I like the mistiness of the background mountain tops - this way they look distant from the foreground, preserving that 3D impression..

Re: Before The Storm
I love the original photo. It has beautiful and calming effect. It reminds me of those old western public domain movies that's been restored to HD format.

Re: Before The Storm
David, I also like the first one. However I like the others too but in a different way. No matter what version is a preference you have a great image with this one :)
