Joe, I submit that your getting up-close to the birds is a wise thing, as is focusing on the head.
A fair number of birders use a Better Beamer [url]http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3651[/url for brightening the eyes at those distances. ;)
Aside from that, the decision remains...how much of the milieu does one keep in the image.
Sounds like an artistic question to me. :D
