I actually haven't done much with capturing flare, so I don't know the ideal situation other than that the direct rays of the sun must not be blocked by a lens hood or other object. Different apertures will have different effects on the style of the flare and perhaps even the shape of the aperture will be apparent when using certain aperture settings, but I don't remember which apertures produce which effects.
Once again thanks for the information. My kit lens captured flares while doing lotus temple sun shot. It was shot with my tamron 90mm macro lens. :) I don't have vast range of lens and sometimes I really enjoy mpving my feet and tripod with a prime lens.

Raj,
Great image. And any monument to those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice is always great, appreciated and necessary. Strong work.
