Tripods

Colin and Manfred those Feisol tripods are great along with ball heads, only thing I change was I swapped out their clamp to a RRS quick release clamp as I have mounted the RRS L-brackets to both my D600 and D7000 camera. Here in Canada the tripod is about $650.00 try getting a Gitzo for that.

I think my Gitzo and RRS head - inc freight and taxes - totaled about NZD 2500 (that's around USD 2000 at the time)

Colin, your "challenge" would be tough to undertake, not so much for the tripod's ability, more having to do with my own agility!

Although the Gitzo is beyond my budget, I do admire its capability to sit almost flat on the ground. And straddling that stream is wondrous to behold! Hope I can find one that will come close. Alan (Polar01) suggested the Feisel, which looks pretty good. My Benro (Aluminum) has been decent, but I found it problematic when I started to do macro - the center column doesn't let the camera get so close to the ground. I could reverse it and hang the camera up-side-down, but would have to plan for this in advance - don't want to be fooling around with this in the great outdoors!

Does anyone know if there is a way to modify a tripod - take out the center column - and still be able to put on a QR plate? Just wondering. Not sure I want to try cutting off part of the column.
