The batteries are a different kettle of fish though; because of their mass, they're much slower to heat up, but much slower to cool down -- and I suspect that the continuous shooting just kept them heating and heating and heating and heating. So long enough between shots for the flash internal circuitry to cool, but not long enough for the battery heat to dissipate.
All very true, but I'm surprised the batteries can get hot enough to melt their wrappers without the flash's thermal protections kicking in. Makes me wonder where the temperature sensor(s) is(are) located. I know I was pushing it, I just though I'd be dealing with the flash shutting down from thermal overload, not dying.
Fortunately, my tax return just came through, and I've been meaning to get a third flash anyway. Excellent timing, and a great excuse to give the 600EX-RT a whirl. Shiiiny. :D

. . . I am glad you two mentioned that: I have a stock collection of "Mechanical Engineer's" quips . . .

In that case let me start with one that a friend, who was an electrical engineer in the army, told me.
Mechanical engineers build weapons; civil engineers build targets...

Warning: Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAs in Canon 580EX II
But electronic engineers do it with higher frequency!
Re: Warning: Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAs in Canon 580EX II
eh watt?
you're a bright spark
but that's re-volting . . .
Oh dear we'll have a parliament of puns now . . .

Ha - battery charging is revolting!

Mechanical: The original engineering. :D
My favorite engineer joke is about a graduate computer engineer biking home from class. He meets one of his mates, who asks where the new bike came from. The cyclist tells his engineer friend about a beautiful woman who came up to him on the bike, stopped, took off all her clothes, and said "take whatever you want."
His mate says "Good choice. The clothes probably wouldn't fit."
