Nikon D7000 remote shutter release

The D5000 has a built in intervalometer, I suspect the D7000 may too.

I have the ML-L3 and use it when the camera is tripod mounted for available light shooting of close up or macro subjects to avoid the risk of moving the camera when releasing the shutter manually (shutter speed usually between 1/10 and 1 second).

I have only the front IR sensor on my D5000, but even with just that, for indoor table top shooting, I find enough IR is reflected from walls, light box or subject to trigger the shutter 9/10 times.

I believe in bulb mode it is "one push open, second push shuts", but I haven't tried it.

I have a "Promote Control" I use for LE as well as time lapse and bulb-ramping. I love it.

There are quite a few applications that can trigger your camera in all sorts of ways and use lifeview for remote viewing using a humble usb-cable. Even lightroom 4 has some rudimentary tethering functions. I personally use Gphoto2 and Darktable in linux
