What a fascinating discussion on fuel/gas station etiquette. I don't know of any place in the UK where you would get attendant service. It's all self service. Now, at a lot of places, you just put your credit card into a slot at the side of the pump, so you never have to interact with another human being.

I am happy to say that we still have an attendant filling the tank, a second cleaning the windows and on request, a third checking tyre pressures.
Must take a photograph before they become history!

No little clips in Oz, hasn't been for many years (for petrol) but a short piece of 2x1 performs a similar function :)
OTOH the truck diesel pump still have them, when pumping 2000ltrs you don't want to stand there holding the trigger, even with the high-flow pumps. Also I often have two running at once in separate tanks while filling a third tank with petrol.

Alas I am saddened to report that these devices might indeed be the end of the world as we know it, as is testament to this one discovered by the Mars rover, predicting imminent endings much like the red planet.
