I've just come across this thread and appreciate the many helpful suggestions in it.
Christina, I took some bald eagle and great blue heron shots last week. The heron photos were all complete duds so I know how hard it is to capture flying birds. I've decided I need to get a lot of practice in with seagulls, which are readily available here.

I'm only the person who posted the question asking for help, to which I received all those helpful replies. I must say that I'm truly delighted that I found this forum, and I've learned a lot since stumbling across it! Thank you everyone.
However, it is great to hear that my questions are helpful to others.
Birds in flight are indeed challenging. I typically practice on pelicans because they are just the right size for my lens, and found in abundance where I live, plus I just love capturing their antics! So practicing on pigeons is a great idea, and I look forward to seeing your pigeon photos... My current challenge is doing justice to black-bellied whistling ducks and green parrotlets in flight... One day!
