I usually make a set of thumbnails using Fookes Software's program EZThumbnails. I specify that I want the longer dimension to be 250 pixels and let the shorter dimension default to whatever it will be when the aspect ratio is maintained. Those are the only things I put in a public environment. Sometimes, when I put them up on a restricted site, I'll build the thumbnails and have them link to the "original" sized image. But when that happens, I already don't have an expectation of selling them.
Yesterday, I saw a really nice watermark that was about 90 percent transparent. It was enough to be obnoxious, but VERY difficult to remove without totally wrecking the picture. One thing about that watermark is the designer used a clear but scripty font which, with its variable width strokes contributed to the difficulty of removing it.
One of my things to do this week is to work out my own watermark to work as cleverly as the one I saw.
