Really love your first shots Paul; it takes a lot of patience to get that close. Back in January I spent one whole afternoon stalking a couple on the beach nearby. First try, got too close too quickly and spooked him, got lucky(ish) on focus for in flight: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7160/6...6d414b_b_d.jpg 30 minutes later uncropped @ 200mm: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7114/6...ef0085_b_d.jpg

Nice Mike, they do have an impressive wing span. That first shot, you caught him in a great position. Well done.

Some great photos here.
Here is a recent fairly poor effort. My excuse is my longest lens is a very old 70-210mm zoom so the photo has been cropped, but really I need to improve.

Herons (Ardea cinerea) are common in and around London and some are very tolerant of humans.
This is from some time ago when one landed on the garden fence.

On my way in this guy jumped up infront of me before I even saw him. I was able to get only one shot off before he went behind a dock. I had my camera set to single shot. Almost got him all in there. I still like the shot though and it was the only Heron I shot that day as you have seen I was busy with all the other birds, beavers and such. :)

No shortage of herons around here, either. I took the first from a boat; somehow, a lot of the birds we see seem to feel less threatened when approached by a boat and we can get really close to them. When approached on foot, however...

Ok. Mine is a really bad shot taken with a p&s before I got my DSLR this Christmas. Only reason I posted is this guy kept following me around. Shot at 28mm ISO 100, f/4.5. I never spent any time on pp since it is not a good pic. Just thought it was funny reading the captions regarding trying to capture and what a waste to have me as a beginner with this dude right on my heels and I could not capture a good shot:mad:
