Thanks for the clarification which makes sense to me. It seems that the only reason for the use of high frequency is simply to reduce size of the ballast (hence "compact") and perhaps to increase the efficiency (in a similar way to DC switching regulators).

To show what I described--last night I took an iPhone shot of my lighting setup after taking some pictures of bleeding hearts. This will show the lighting I described in my earlier post. The direct light is set up for backlighting. Needless to say, the CFLs in the ceiling were turned off when I was doing the shots. The only lighting was from the booms, with 75W and 50W halogen floods.
