Smart Sharpen, very briefly, sharpens all pixels not just the edges like standard Unsharp Mask which can sometimes tend to exaggerate noses and eyes when used on faces.
There are adjustment options which allow for different amounts of sharpening to be applied for highlights and shadows separately.
I find it isn't always suitable for universal sharpening in all circumstances; but it sometimes works better when Unsharp Mask isn't producing the desired effect.
And face sharpening problems can be one of those circumstances where I sometimes find Smart Sharpen to be useful.
But I repeat, I often find that Unsharp Mask works best for most uses.
