Early by the Sea

I think they're wonderful photos and as soon as I read that you were at the beach at 3.30am- what time did you get up ? lol..or didn't you go to bed ? I thought here's someone that's going to get on top of this. I'd never have thought it was only your second attempt at LE. Tripod yes, cable release,yes..... mirror lock-up maybe ??? :) This is a good read http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tu...ror-lock.shtml I can give some advice here too as a result of finding out the hard way. After you've used mirror lock-up for the the shots you want, disable it. I've lost shots (especially first-off grab shots) next time out because I've left it on mirror lock-up especially the 7D which I use for wildlife. It should be part of the check list prior to going out but we suffer human failings and in relation to photography forgetting about that is one of them .

Imagination or not, I think you ought to report this just to be on the safe side. Really. There's no point in taking chances. Our police are great, and are happy to log any unusual events or suspicions. If yours are the same it would be worth letting them know, just for the record.

Goodness me! We've only just met and you're asking me about my bedtime habits :D

I usually go to bed at sunset and rise well before dawn, so it was no hardship. I love cycling down the lanes, very slowly, trying to avoid squishing anything living. Pipistrelles sometimes fly so close I can feel the breath of their wings and I get to see hedgehogs and shrews too. You slug-a-beds don't know what you're missing ;)

Ever since I got a compact I've taken snaps every day. When I got a DSLR camera it got worse and if I didn't have the chance to take photos at least once a day I'd get withdrawal symptoms. I don't understand it. If I'd been this focused with my drawing I'd be so much better now, but photography really is like a drug.

I recently said that there's nothing I wouldn't do to improve, which, come to think of it, was probably a little unwise ;) But it's close. If I'm not taking photos I'm reading about photography, looking at other people's photos (and Exif data), thinking and dreaming about it, and I like to talk about it more than any other topic. My friends are starting to look a bit worn :D

My second attempt at landscape photography with a DSLR camera, my first at LE - I had no idea what I was doing but did as I'd been advised and played around with different settings. I'd done a lot of close ups on manual before, but this was a very different thing altogether, and I realised that I had no idea really where I should be focusing, so I ended up doing the macro thing and just focused on my main target. I'm sure that's not what I was supposed to be doing :eek:

I did use mirror lock-up because a friend had recently advised me to use it for close-ups, but as I go for moving things it wasn't much good because live view wasn't clear enough for that final bit of focusing. Great for still lifes though, so I used it out on the beach as well :)

I've bookmarked the tutorial for reading later. I've been leaving mirror lock-up enabled, but I did press the button to bring the mirror down each time after I'd taken a shot. Will leaving it enabled be a problem for me with the kind of shots I take? You have all my admiration for doing wildlife shots. I have enough trouble chasing after invertebrates :)

I did report it. They have been driving by periodically. And fortunately, my guys have made sure that I know how to safely handle a weapon and... I am a good shot. :) Not something I like to think about needing to do, but at least I know I am capable.

I'm not so good at the latter. I give until there's nothing left to give but am finally figuring out that if I don't look after myself I'm shortly going to be all given out and won't be much good to anyone. My dog, walking, and my camera are my escapes.

I've been there too, until a wise man saw what I was doing to myself and acted as a catalyst to set me free. I was needed by too many. Now I spend far more time on myself and can be a better friend to fewer people, and they give back to me in equal measure :)

Have to defend Meself Lol. I'm a morning person too (they say it's in the genes-morning person, night person) I flag after 10.00pm. I've have been on the local hill at 4.30am to photograph the Moon,Jupiter and Saturn when they were in conjunction-I also get to the River Severn here at sunrise to get the autumn mists,it's the best time of the day I think and you have the world to yourself too.

There's a Zen book on drawing and seeing that I like, and in it the author said "All that is, is worthy of being drawn" so maybe that applies to photography too.....however, I must confess, that I can think of a few exceptions ;)

I completely agree with you :)

I definitely think you're right about it being in the genes. Crowds (i.e. more than one other person :D) don't interest me any more, and I wouldn't give up having the the natural world all to myself in those early mornings to go back to socialising in the evenings ever again. I'm not a misanthrope. I love people, but only one-to-one. Non-human lifeforms I can handle in flocks or herds at any time :)

It will be a few years before I can afford the kind of lens I'd need to point towards the heavens, but our skies are relatively dark and I'm often star gazing. Do you have any links for your astronomical photos?

As for mists, we have gorgeous sea mists and I once saw a mist bow, unfortunately before I had a camera. I enjoyed the tutorial here for taking photos of mists. Very illuminating :)

I took my new 24-105mm as it has IS and I couldn't carry a tripod up and down the cliff paths (must wait for daughter's pay day before getting the Lowepro). It was really hot and that's not my kind of weather. I think my ancestors must have come from the far north. Also, almost all the views seemed so touristy. When I can make good photos out of places like those I'll know I've made it :)

The sun was bleaching everything that wasn't in hiding, and what remained in shadow showed little tonal contrast. I learned a lot about what can't be photographed yesterday ;)

Do these sound like excuses to you? :D I did get a few photos that almost worked though, and will probably post them later so that I can learn how I could have done a better job.

Have you been up to anything since the bridge?

Hi Greg, Thanks for commenting, and as for being pleased.......well........I was going to say something self-denigrating, but suddenly imagined Donald advancing on me with a big hammer in his hand! In truth, I'm never wholly pleased, but don't beat myself up about it either. I liked the sand photos most of all. I'll be more in my element with stormy seas, and everything around here's been calm for many months. I'll bet you get some brilliant high seas around Tasmania, and you must be near the coast.

68F? That is too funny. :D I've forgotten what that feels like. ;)

I know. I really am going to die here.;) What's worse is that we moved her from New Hampshire and, well, there was snow on the ground when we moved in May...I'm having a tough time acclimating. :(

I don't have a scope,Seri-I used a the 400mm end of a 100-400 lens, I'm not an astronomer but have a friend who is, infact he disoverd an asteroid which was then numbered and against that, his name and I'm just about to create a website for my photos- I say 'I'..I better quality that :)with some, no..a great deal, of help - my point was really that I am, like yourself ,an early riser and like you prefer the company of one not 4 but am more than happy with just myself - I think a lot of photographers are quite happy to photograph on their own.

What a pity about missing the mist bow-I'll check out the mist tutorial.
