I got an octogone softbox working with a speedlight and tried some shots with my grand son. (It's his first session in studio too)

What a handsome young man! I like this shot very much.
My only suggestion would be to use a reflector off to the side to fill in a bit of the shadows on the left side of his face. Other than that, I really like the lighting and the composition here.
Very nice shot. The lighting is quite dramatic. I would tend to shoot the same way as Kim has suggested; a white reflector just out of the frame camera left to pump in a bit of fill light on the dark side of the face,
Nice shot Jean,
I agree with the reflector to lighten the face a bit, always best to get it right at this point.
If not and you are not in a position to re-shoot, perhaps a little PP might work, something like this perhaps.

John

Awesome. Classic pose.
Light? I guess they gave some good advice above.
Perhaps, crop left/right side a little. Such that a diagonal line ( passing the tip of his right eyebrow.)
starting from the right bottom corner intersects with the left side top corner of the frame.
Please check out Colin's tutorial about Portraits. I learned a lot from them.

Nice modification.
Thanks JPS.
nimitzbenedicto, If I correctly understood JPS and your comment. My picture should be like this?
lightened in shadows face and cropped a little.

Excellent classic pose and your final edit brings out the character in his eyes. My only very minor comment would be to avoid small details like the zip pull and the logo at the bottom because they can be slightly distracting. But good work.
Hi Jean,
I like the way you did the first shot. The light is beautiful with no harsh light reflection in his face. His right eye is not buried in darkness and in my opinion it is great.
A very good portrait IMHO. Well done.

your comment is appropriate, I let it because he is proud of his new jacket.
So for him he will have a picture with, and for me I'll erase these distracting elements.
Thanks

I bet his mother was pleased. ;)
Of course, she asked me to send her many prints, as well for his brother shot the same day, I'll show you later. But as newbie I don't know if I need to open a new thread or continue this one ?
Leave the logo and send to Fred Perry. Much better image and model than those on their own website.
Maybe you could offer your services
Why not, do they pay well?:D
I already suggested to my grand son preparing a photo book and get some money with his look.
Another shot for comments too Pls :

Another great pose!
Btw, perhaps, keep his whole right elbow in the frame.
And avoid "crab-claws" . i.e. the index-thumb opening. Preferred is they're closed.
Hand positioning is also vital so they don't look larger than his head.
His left hand/arm is ok. Just close his fngers.
But maybe turn his hand/forearm sideways , so the hand looks smaller than his face.

Finally with this picture, I retain two formats: one 2x3, the other square like this. I improved slightly dark area by adjusting the brightness using a mask for just the right cheek
