    Pictures from a Newbie

    Hi everyone.

I would like to share some of my shots using my Canon G11. I'm still quite young in photography and I am not well introduced to post processing. I processed these pictures to the best that I can do.

Feel free to comment or criticize, that's the reason why I'm posted these pictures. TY.

These are very, very good images. The first of them is particularly impressive, in my view.

It would be better if you were able to insert them into your post so that people don't have to click on the links to see them.

If you have not already done so, you can study the help thread that is available from the HELP/Rules menu tab above. This explains hoe to post your images.

If you are still not sure after reading this, then please do ask us.

Willie or Jiro is fine by me.

    Re: Pictures from a Newbie

I like the first one among the 3, Leo. You have a good eye for composition on this one. What makes it work for me is that you were able to make your main subject stand out by blurring the background. Second, the subject has a nice appeal to it - a young budding leaf with water dew drops in it. Probably, this was shot after a mild rain or after a storm (which usually occurs in the Philippines.) However, there are some distracting elements inside the frame that weakens the image. Among them are the 3 bright areas on top of the leaf, and the lens bokeh anomaly.

What I would probably do (if this is my image) to make it stronger in appeal is to:

    1. Clone out these 3 white blobs by copying the neighboring pixels around the blobs.

    2. make a new copy of the background layer in photoshop and then blur this layer to lessen that harsh transition of the bokeh on the blurred background.

    3. Make another copy of the background layer but this time apply a mask to it so that the main subject (the leaf) will be left on top retaining its sharpness on the mask.

    4. Add a little bit of curve adjustment to darken the image a little bit, then lastly... apply a small amount of sharpening to the whole combined image.

    Something like this:

Looking forward to seeing some more of your work here, bro'.

Thank you for the input, Jiro. It's a big help for a starter like me. I'll try or practice what you have suggested. I may not be quite introduced to post processing, but I will exhaust everything I have to have my picture look like what you've done. Amazing!

Oooops!!! My bad. Sorry if I did not remember that you are also new to post-processing. Anyway, I hope that you would soon find out that post-processing helps a lot in bringing out your vision and make your shots stronger by adjusting its elements and visual appeal.

I would agree, very nice start. Also Jiro's play works nice. I like both #1 and 2.

I agree, you've a good eye for composition.

I found #3 intersting You've got a nice use of negative space and the juxtaposition of that man made bright blue barrel amidst all the nature makes quite a statement.
