    Whales :)

Following on Rob's "Wales" post, I thought I'd share a different type of "whales" from our trip (and a couple of dolphins frolicking by the boat). Not great pics -- boy, is it hard to capture those things, when they pop up all over the place, and people are yelling at you, "Over there! Turn around!" and you turn around to find the tail just disappearing under the water. I actually saw two whales jump out of the water, for the first time ever while whale-watching, but of course had no hope of getting the camera to my eye at those moments. But they will remain forever in my memory --

You didn't want to slip into the water and swim with them? Put your camera in a plastic bag - it'll be fine...

We were on a 52' sailboat, and the captain pointed out that the whales we were looking at (humpbacks) run about 60' He kept saying, she's probably under the boat right now . . .

These are from the Pacific Ocean side of Cabo San Lucas, in Mexico. The humpbacks and grey whales migrate from Alaska, down past where I live in Santa Cruz, California, to Baja California to give birth to their babies and breed. Then the pregnant mothers et al head back up to Alaska in the summer, and then back down to Baja again . . . so, many opportunities for whale watching all up and down the coast. There have also been blue whales sighted this year, but unfortunately we haven't been out to see them (and they haven't been in Mexico). Supposedly they are huuuuge and an amazing sight to see.

I got some o.k. pictures of humpbacks on a whale watch out of Gloucester, MA. I posted some fluke pictures and someone was able to i.d. the individual whales. The underside of the tail has a unique pattern.
One of the calves swam right up to the boat to check us out.

That's wonderful, George -- that must have been really thrilling. Some of these were close, but not all that close, and the ones that breached were pretty far away. But still exciting.

I really appreciate the difficulty. Here's one of mine. It was taken from the shore, not a surfboard, and I believe it is a southern right whale. The best views were the day before when I didn't have a camera .

Wow! That's amazing! I would have been a little nervous, being out there on a surfboard, but what a thrill!

Oh my goodness me. The sheer thrill, as Elise says, of being out there on surfboard and that happening. Those people look so relaxed and calm about it - which is beautiful to see.

Thanks, Elise. I'd go on another whale watch in a heartbeat.
