This is an Anahinga, a water bird that has no oil in/on its feathers and if it doesn't allow the sun to dry its feathers, when it lands in the water, it sinks like a rock.

We have a similar looking water bird in Australia. It's called a cormorant or a shag in common parlance. There's a saying about being the odd one out: 'I felt like a shag on a rock'. And yes, there is another meaning to shag. I can hear my UK friends tittering away.

I like the colours in this photo Chris. The wings look like velvet. Nice shot!

And funny you should mention the Commorant as they are directly related to each other. I have seen them in the Carribean doing the same thing, so when I came across this guy, yesterday, I had to do some research. They are a very pretty bird.

I thought Austin Powers coined that phrase?

They look like the cormorants we have out here, too.

This is what the Cormorants they use for fishing along the Li River in China look like. They band the bird's neck so it cannot swallow a large fish and when the bird brings in a large fish, they are given a small scrap of fish which they can swallow. I wonder what labor unions would say about that? Exploitation of the working class? I had planned to go out in the evening and shoot the fishermen on their boats with their lights and their birds but, inclement weather prevented that.
