Say Hello to ... Jessica @ The Beach

I took a few shots of my 2nd daughter today; about the same time last week I got soaked when I ended up in the sea whilst trying for "dramatic perspective" shots, so this week I "smartened up" and wore a pair of waders, which worked a treat ...

... right up until I got water running down the back (and yes, they do hold water perfectly )

To make things even worse, those weren't even the keepers

But here's a few that were; more in my "New for 2011 gallery" if anyone's interested.

PS: If anyone's thinking "Aww - he just dialed in a truckload of saturation", in reality, I've actually REDUCED the saturation in these by 8 to 10%!)

Also discovered this today - a 360 degree "rainbow" around the sun! Shot at "sunny 16" settings ...

Colin! Don't you know that you should never turn your back on the ocean! Especially with a camera in hand!

I like #2 with her sweet wisps of hair and bright eyes. What does she think of the boas? Does she like them? They seem to "choke" her in the other ones but, in #2, they look like leis. Well, that is certainly just MY opinion and isn't necessarily right.

    What a beautiful sunset!

Well, it's good enough for me!

Apart from the perfect ( I think) exposure on Jessica's face, the composition that's put her at one side of the frame so that we get the full beauty of the sunset, is the BIG strength of this one ... in my opinion.

Beautiful colors, can't believe you could get the exposure on the third photo with the sun so bright.

Collin, I also like #2, #4 for is a cool looking shot.

#1 does look as the boa is a bit choking. #3 would have been my pic had she not had her arms crossed, it gives somewhat of a shut down un-receptive feel.

    Hi Katy,

The camera is fine ... it's just me I'm worried about!

The "boas" are "ok", although the feathers tend to fall out if they're not handled carefully (which they never are!). We tried a number of combinations, but to be honest, nothing really worked particularly well, so it was just another case of "doing the best I could at the time".

The sunset wasn't actually that amazing to the naked eye, but when you under-expose them and capture just the bits you want they tend to look a bit better.

    Thanks Donald,

Personally I prefer #3, but there you go!

    Thanks John,

Are you meaning #3 or #4? #3 wasn't really any different to #1 and #2.

Ah - thought so. I deliberately went with "sunny 16" because I knew that the full sun would upset any regular metering.

I love the color, exposure, and detail of #1. Was this done with a blue gel to get sky that color?

    Hi Brian,

Thanks for that. No, not a blue gel. 1/2 cut CTO off memory. I'll do some blue ones shortly.

    Hi Thierry,

Thanks for that. Unfortunately the wide-angle lens tends to make closer things like that bigger, so my preference would have been to actually crop a bit more off it.

That's right concerrning wide angle. what I mentionned is really a detail and this picture stays in any case a very good one

Hmmm, I would think a blue gel would add so much color to the sky - still learning!

Guess I need to Reread portraiture lesson 7?
