    Keeping to subject

I wonder if we could try a little harder to keep to the subject of a thread? No harm in minor humorous asides and peregrinations.

However, some of us post for genuine Constructive Criticism in photo commentary section and serious discussion in technical, PP etc and threads become difficult to follow if they go wandering all over the galaxy

Yes, I've noticed that some threads have done that a little lately. I think part of this is perhaps a side effect of the fact that there's been increasing numbers of posts and overall traffic to this section of the website. Overall, this is definitely a good thing. However, it also means that there probably needs to be more moderation/pruning of posts...

The thread on trees/sunsets (which I presume is the motivator for your post) has been split into two threads:
can you have too many trees in the sunset shots?
Foreground boat with simple pond sunset background

In the future, send me a PM or post something here if there's a thread that we think might need splitting or pruning. That's probably the most efficient way to do this.

    Thank you once again McQ.

The other one that could do with a prune is my thread
    Using Nikon Capture NX 2
where Nokinnikon entered the forum like a hurricane for a few days, blocked PMs so it had to be done in-thread and then disappeared. Pity as he is a pro with a lot to teach us.

At least it prompted me to do a gallery on it in pbase which is tamper-proof.

But I notice it in the Camera Equipment forums as well.

Err, as probably the main offender, I'll put up my hand and say sorry folks!

Personally I find it a tough one to judge at times - comments I make to the likes of Matt & Phillip whilst (initially anyway) commenting on something else sometimes lead things in the wrong direction thus I should probably confine them to a PM, but the one I'm not so sure about is when I pop an image into a reply to illustrate something --- and they often seem to divert things a bit from there for some reason. Perhaps It's better off if I just post a link?

    Cheers,

I think this is gonna be hard to do if we want the site to grow with more members and more traffic coming in from places like stumbleupon. I agree with Chris about the thing with nokkinnikon whoever he was, but I disagree with you Colin insofar as I don't think you've ever messed up a thread. I'm on flickr groups most of the time and I don't think any thread has stuck to topic. The only way around this, I think, would be a private section. Personally I don't like the idea of that.

No doubt we did go a little of topic, sometimes it can be fine as long as the topic isn't hijacked for too long.

"I think this is gonna be hard to do if we want the site to grow with more members and more traffic coming in from places like stumbleupon."

I find it an interesting point of discussion to be honest; on one hand if replies are kept strictly on topic then I wonder if the site then becomes more of a "question & answer resource" than it does a community, but on the other hand if a thread (our "basic communication vehicles") wander around like a ship without a rudder then we probably end up being more like a social club than a valuable photographic-related resource. I think both have their place, but how one impliemnts that I'm afraid I have no idea!

    Cheers,

    Colin

    Re: Keeping to subject

I agree with Colin's post that we need both a sense of community and useful, easy to follow representation of knowledge. Ideally these should not be competing with one another. I definitely don't want anything other than a sterile Q&A board. I think we just need to compartmentalize these areas into different forums. However, I am still waiting for more posts and traffic to see exactly how things should be split up. This means that in the meantime we're going to have some unavoidable overlap, and potentially higher than normal forums moderation...

    Re: Keeping to subject

I'd agree that making it too sterile wouldn't be that appealing to many. I know I'm guilty here much more than colin so sorry! I have a bad habit of going off on one (real life too). I think a general guideline of posting "on topic" content that isn't super strict so related drifting a little is ok since that can add to the topic. If it became the predominant theme in the thread then it could just be split into a new thread if need be.

As for complete off topic content I think the odd comment in an otherwise fine post is alright but if it's way out there (again it's probably going to be me) then trimming it will help. I think the new off topic branch should help keep the rest clear. Also photo related topic that doesn't seem to have a home could always be housed in a new section if becomes major discussion area.
