Best Free Photo Editing Software?

Does anyone know of a good free photo editing package available for download from the internet? If not, what's a good one to purchase for someone new to digital SLR photography. I have a Nikon D60.

I use gimp, it's not Photoshop but it's free.:D

Another good one for quick simple adjustments is Faststone Image Viewer

Just my personal fav's.

Picassa - editing + organization software - have used it and works good.

Faststone Image Viewer - editing + disk browser - never used it for editing, but liked it because you could get a fast overview of the images you are loading to your computer. (liked it so much that I even bought a licence for it (and it's freeware :o )

Tried the Gimp, - editing (didn't do 16bit images when I last looked) and I believe it to have almost as much power as photoshop, on the other hand it is as complex. Because my work has always got me photoshop I never invested enough time in the Gimp

Lightroom 2.2 - raw editing + organization software + completely non destructive - I started using lightroom 2 months ago and have really fallen in love with it. Till then I used Imatch to organize my images.

Have you already tryed the software wich comes with your camera?

Lightroom or Aperture [Mac only] are probably the easiest programs to get to know -- some programs like Photoshop can do everything, but have a very steep learning curve.

See Nikon Capture NX2 thread in Image Post-processing and Printing section & at the last post you will see a URL to my intro.

It is usually on 30 days free trial, though you then have to pay up £130 I think, but IMO it is THE PP package for Nikon cameras and cheaper than full PS but more than PSE.

If you are going to be serious about photography you need one of these which I think are the only ones that allow you to edit images selectively. If you don't like NX2, PSE6 will sort 95% of your needs, just no curves and maybe other odds missing or they couldn't get away with charging you so much for the full works

Undoubtedly NX2 is my favourite, but it doesn't cover all eventualities and you will need something else for using as a library/heavier image manipulation.

What did you get with the D60? Are you a Windows or Mac user?

Lightroom 2 is very easy to learn and is specifically aimed at photographers. Good library / basic manipulation package.

Infranview can do a few things well.
