    Weevils

While looking through some old macro shots for nature competitions I ran across this green weevil.

    Weevils

Our local weevils don't look like that. I couldn't recall where I had actually taken the picture until I looked at bugguide and then checked the date. The Green Weevil is an invasive species from Europe and I had taken this one in England.

Our local Little Leaf-notcher weevils pale in comparison.

Maybe #2 for me, not for the beast color but for the surrounding smoother than on the first.

Weevils are a tricky group to identify but I would say the green one is a Phyllobius species. Probably P. pomaceus (Green Nettle Weevil) which is a relatively common species in the UK.

The green scales rub off with time which produces a somewat blotchy appearance.

So, then they become the lesser of two weevils?

I think I am going blind but the green weavil shot is too green everywhere for comfort and the red background one has the tint of red even in the brown weavil...

There hasn't been a lot done to these. I could make the green image less bright and reduce saturation but I think those are fresh nettle leaves and they are very green. There is a tiny spider, or a shed skin of something, in the top right corner and the colors look right. The red is the inside of a red flower.

The one thing I did change was to invert the green one. See how the legs are extended? It was actually hanging down. It just looked unnatural in isolation.

I tried a major reduction on hightlights and I think it looks better like this.

    Weevils

Sorry I got lost in my cooking assignments as of late so I have to catch up. I like the first of the edits in your last post. It looks much better when there is a comparison...
