    Institute of Photography courses anyone?

    Hi guys
As I`m new to dslr photography I`m toying with starting an on line photography course here in the UK with the Institute of Photography (IOP) based in Manchester and wondered if any in the forum have done one of their courses and how they found the company please?. A mum that takes her kids to my granddaughters school is doing one of their courses and very happy with it but it would be useful to hear from others.
    thanks
    Steve

I believe Donald did some courses research last year, he may shed some light (excuse the pun).

Personally I use Lynda.com (subscription) and Creative Live (buy and download, or watch on line), plus YouTube in general, but that's risky when you start if you don't recognise those that themselves don't understand what they're talking about (and consequently feed you 'duff gen', which could mislead you for a while).

Depends what you're wanting from a course.

This is very much an arts-based course. It is about creating art using photography as the medium. You're NOT going to talk about cameras or anything technical about photography. You're going to talk about vision and creativity and projects and what it is you're trying to say in your photography. You've made a wonderful picture -'Why?'

You'rfe going to read a lot of about theories behind photography. You're going to look at a lot of pictures (photographs and paintings) made by other people and talk about them.

So along the lines of the Michael Freeman range of books, not so much of the 'how' but more of the 'why' of photography?.
Just bought one of Michael's books (The Photographers Eye) and very interesting to read.

Along those lines. Freeman's, 'The Complete Guide to Black & White Digital Photography', ILEX, 2009. has been my photographic bible.

But even then, Freeman does talk of the technical aspects of photography. But, yes, certainly on that side of the tracks.
